Today we’d like to introduce you to Yong Hong Zhong.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Art has been a passion of mine ever since I was a child growing up in China in the 1970s. However, it wasn’t until my family immigrated to the United States in the early 1980s that this passion began to truly take shape. We settled in Chinatown, New York City, where I spent several formative years. Living in such a vibrant cultural hub gave me access to some of the world’s greatest museums and art institutions, opening my eyes to the possibilities of artistic expression and inspiring me to pursue my creative journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the most challenging obstacles I faced was the language barrier. However, my love of art became a bridge to connection and self-expression, helping me navigate this difficulty. I was also fortunate to meet some of the most inspiring teachers, whose guidance and encouragement played a crucial role in my journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
am a full-time watercolor painter and teacher, deeply passionate about both creating and sharing art. Since 2012, I have participated in several plein air painting competitions across the country each year. My work is represented by multiple galleries in the Portland metro area and is available for purchase through these galleries or directly from my website.
Teaching is an integral part of my life, allowing me to connect with like-minded artists and students, sharing my love for watercolor. My unique approach to painting sets me apart, blending my background as a storyteller at Disney Animation Studio with my deep appreciation for nature, shaped by my early years growing up in China. These influences have merged to create a distinctive artistic style that reflects both narrative depth and a profound connection to the natural world.
Additionally, my experience raising my children has deepened my conviction in teaching. Watching them learn and grow has reinforced my belief in the power of guidance, patience, and encouragement—values I bring into my teaching practice to inspire and nurture the next generation of artists.
What are your plans for the future?
I will be relocating to a new home with a much larger painting studio, which will allow me to host future painting workshops. This new space is also closer to nature, providing an environment that resonates with the landscapes I grew up with in China. The move will not only enhance my creative process but also offer an inspiring setting for my students to learn and grow.
