Hi Wenqing, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?

I grew up on the quiet streets of a small town in China, where my fascination with art began. This early passion carried me from that serene environment to the dynamic world of American art, where I found new ways to express my creativity. After moving to the United States, I pursued my passion for illustration by enrolling at the Maryland Institute College of Art. This education equipped me with the skills and inspiration to explore the vast realm of digital illustration.

In 2021, I made a life-changing decision to leave my job in accounting and dedicate myself entirely to illustration. This transition marked a profound shift in my mindset and lifestyle, allowing me to embrace my true calling and express myself freely through art. Since then, I’ve focused on building a body of work that reflects my journey and growth as an artist. My work has been recognized internationally, receiving accolades from competitions like 3×3, Creative Quarterly, and Applied Arts, which has been both humbling and inspiring.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

The path to establishing myself in the art world has been anything but smooth. Transitioning from a stable career in accounting to the uncertain realm of illustration posed significant challenges. Building a portfolio, finding my unique voice amidst many talented artists, and navigating the competitive art industry were daunting tasks. However, these challenges taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and the importance of authentic self-expression. I’ve learned that success doesn’t come overnight and that the journey itself is just as important as the destination. Each obstacle has been an opportunity to grow and refine my skills, reinforcing my belief that “slow is faster than stuck.”

Another significant challenge has been balancing the creative aspects of my work with the business side of being an independent artist. Marketing my art, managing finances, and navigating the complexities of self-promotion are skills I had to develop alongside my artistic talents. It took time and effort to build an online presence and connect with my audience, but these efforts have paid off in unexpected ways, providing me with opportunities to collaborate with other artists and participate in international exhibitions. Learning to wear multiple hats has been a demanding yet rewarding experience, teaching me resilience and adaptability—qualities that have become essential components of my journey as an artist.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

I’m a digital illustrator based in the Bay Area, focusing on creating illustrations that are humorous, engaging, and warm. My art is often characterized by its ability to resonate emotionally with viewers, drawing on universal human experiences to tell stories that are both personal and relatable. I specialize in children’s book illustrations and products, aiming to positively influence young minds with my whimsical and heartfelt style.

One of the aspects I’m most proud of is the international recognition my work has received. My illustrations have won accolades in prestigious competitions such as the World Illustration Awards, Society of Illustrators, JIA, 3×3, Creative Quarterly, and Applied Arts. These achievements validate my belief in the power of perseverance—a quality I hold dear as an artist.

What sets me apart from others is my unique blend of cultural perspectives. Having lived in both China and the USA, I bring a diverse set of influences to my work that allows me to explore complex themes in a way that feels both fresh and authentic. Can you share something surprising about yourself?

Despite my focus on children’s illustrations, many people might be surprised to learn that my background is in accounting. The structured, analytical world of numbers contrasts sharply with the creative freedom I now enjoy as an illustrator. This unexpected shift in career paths highlights my belief in following one’s passion, no matter how unconventional it may seem.
