Today we’d like to introduce you to Urmi Hossain
Hi Urmi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my career in finance in 2016. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce with Honours in Finance.
When I began working, I didn’t realize that I had to take on many jobs before landing my dream job.
My goal was always to be in portfolio management, but it wasn’t something easy or something I could achieve immediately without the necessary experience. I had to take a few different routes and gain various experiences in the market before reaching my goal of where I am today – portfolio management.
I took my first job in a well- known finance company and I told myself that even if this wasn’t what I initially wanted to do, it will still be the first step towards my destination.
I have been in the industry for about 8 years and I learned that the journey to your destination is never linear.
Life will take you down different streets and paths because those experiences are essential for growth, learning from failures, and making mistakes. These life lessons are necessary to become wiser.
I used to take job rejections pretty harshly, but over time, I realized that rejections helped me become more resilient and focused on my goals.
I am where I am today because I tried to enjoy each moment of my career fully, regardless of where I worked. With time, I understood that working in finance and portfolio management is what I wanted. With more passing of time, I learned to explore my creative side too which I developed by creating my own blog, YouTube channel, my first book, and e-books.
The conclusion is in life, if you ever want to do something, you can always do it without waiting for someone to tell you so.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to your destination is never easy or smooth, and it is supposed to be this way. When we look at people and feel envious because they seem to have it all figured out, remember they also have a story filled with struggles and suffering on their path to success.
In my case, the biggest challenge was facing continuous rejections when I was applying for jobs during the pandemic. I told myself, “I have it all, so why am I being rejected?” I spent day and night applying, but for a full year, I faced rejection after rejection.
At that moment, I wanted to give up, but my determination kept me going until I saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
A year later, four companies offered me jobs, and I had a very “good” problem to solve.
I didn’t realize that after all that hard work, I would finally have four companies wanting me. I felt so empowered.
The lesson learned? Never give up. What is meant for you, no matter how hard it is to obtain, will always come to you.
Keep trying and trying until you get your prize.

I have come from a background in finance. I studied finance at university, and it is a subject that I truly love. When I first started in the industry, finding a job was extremely hard. Facing rejection after rejection, I wasn’t quite sure how to get my foot in the industry.
From a professional point of view, I have a very eclectic and diverse background: I have experience in compliance, client servicing, middle office, and lastly, portfolio management.
In April 2023, I earned my CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation, and this year, in 2024, I earned a second charter, the CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) designation. Earning these two prestigious designations is something that makes me very fulfilled and satisfied in life. Indeed these two designations are my biggest achievements because they tell a story of hard work and dedication.
With my experience and knowledge in finance, I want to lead by example and be an inspiration for other women out there who want to pursue a career in finance or just learn.
There is nothing more enjoyable than doing what you love at work and when your company gives you the chance to continually develop yourself.
