Today we’d like to introduce you to Tobe Roberts
Hi Tobe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts (TSOA). I obtained my Master of Fine Arts degree in 1996 in film producing and screenwriting. Since then, I have gained experience as a co-producer of a New York-based video production company specializing in Native American programming, worked at Paramount Pictures East Coast Publicity, and been involved in screenwriting/film & TV development at Atchity Productions.
As a multimedia artist and independent art curator in NYC, I showcase the works of both established and young aspiring artists through a partnership with NYU. I also mentor young filmmakers from NYU and have taught at Fairleigh Dickinson University in the past. I am dedicated to helping others, promoting positivity, and collaborating with artists around the world. During the pandemic, when galleries were closed, I created a virtual gallery to give artists an outlet to express themselves during these challenging times.
My artistic influences range from the techniques of my father, Tobe Roberts Sr., to those of Hasui Kawase, Bill Rabbit, JD Challenger, and R.C. Gorman. I continuously seek out resplendent beauty and a story in my environment, making it a memory to share and evoking tranquility. My fine art photography and intuitive abstracts focus mostly on the richness of bold colors, nature, metaphysical concepts, and striking landscapes. I like to build my portfolio with images that inspire and evoke emotions. I believe art has energetic resonance, and the colors we select can move us and heal. I enjoy including works that showcase my skills in composition, colors that complement each other, use of light, new media techniques and technologies, and different perspectives.
I am also a follower of Budō (武道), a Japanese term describing martial arts or “The Martial Way” – and refers to those martial disciplines whose ultimate goal is spiritual, ethical, and/or moral self-improvement. My art can also be seen to reflect this principle. Additionally, I spread awareness for Wild & Rescued Horses through my photography.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout my journey as an artist and professional in the film and art industries, I have faced several obstacles that have shaped my path and contributed to my growth.
Breaking into the highly competitive fields of film producing, screenwriting, and the art world required perseverance and resilience. The constant need to prove myself and stand out among peers was a significant challenge.
Striking a balance between staying true to my artistic vision and meeting the commercial demands of the industry was often difficult. It required creative problem-solving and adaptability to ensure my work remained authentic while also appealing to a broader audience.
Building a reliable network of collaborators, mentors, and supporters in both the film and art communities took time and effort. Overcoming the initial hurdles of gaining recognition and trust was a crucial step in my career.
Funding artistic projects and sustaining a career in the arts often involved financial constraints. Securing funding for film projects, art exhibitions, and other creative endeavors required persistence and innovative approaches.
The rapid evolution of technology in both the film and art industries presented challenges in keeping up with new tools, techniques, and platforms. Staying updated and continuously learning was essential to remain relevant and competitive.
While rewarding, mentoring young filmmakers and teaching at universities presented its own set of challenges. Balancing my professional work with the responsibilities of guiding and educating others required effective time management and dedication.
The COVID-19 pandemic posed a significant obstacle, with galleries closing and in-person events being canceled. Creating a virtual gallery was a solution to this challenge, but it required adapting to new ways of showcasing art and connecting with audiences.
Balancing the demands of a creative career with personal well-being was an ongoing challenge. Ensuring that I maintained a healthy work-life balance and found time for self-care was essential for sustaining my creativity and passion.
Despite these obstacles, each challenge provided valuable lessons and opportunities for growth, ultimately contributing to my development as an artist and professional.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a multimedia artist, filmmaker, and independent art curator based in New York City. My work spans various forms of artistic expression, including fine art photography, intuitive abstracts, and film production. I specialize in capturing the richness of bold colors, nature, metaphysical concepts, and striking landscapes through my photography. My film work focuses on producing and screenwriting, often highlighting Native American programming and culturally significant narratives.
I am known for my ability to evoke emotions and inspire through my art, blending traditional techniques with new media and technologies. My work as a curator involves showcasing both established and young aspiring artists, creating platforms for diverse artistic voices to be heard. What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my ability to adapt and innovate during challenging times, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. When galleries were closed and traditional avenues for showcasing art were unavailable, I created a virtual gallery to provide artists with an outlet to express themselves. This initiative not only supported artists but also brought art to a broader audience during a time of isolation and uncertainty. Additionally, my work in raising awareness for Wild & Rescued Horses through my photography is a source of pride, as it combines my artistic talents with my passion for animal advocacy.
What sets you apart from others?
Several factors set me apart from others in my field. Firstly, my diverse background and experience across multiple artistic disciplines allow me to bring a unique perspective to my work. My ability to blend traditional techniques with modern technologies creates a distinctive style that resonates with a wide audience.
Secondly, my dedication to mentoring and educating the next generation of artists sets me apart. I believe in the importance of collaboration and sharing knowledge, which has led me to work closely with young filmmakers and artists, helping them develop their skills and find their voices.
Finally, my commitment to finding beauty and storytelling in my environment, coupled with my belief in the healing power of art, drives my creative process. I strive to create art that not only captivates but also resonates on an emotional and spiritual level, fostering a sense of tranquility and connection. My followers appreciate this depth and authenticity, which makes my work stand out in a crowded artistic landscape.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was a curious and imaginative child with a deep love for storytelling and creativity. I was always drawn to the arts, whether it was drawing, painting, or experimenting with my first camera. My personality was a blend of introspection and enthusiasm—I loved spending time alone, delving into my thoughts and dreams, but I also enjoyed sharing my ideas and creations with others.
I had a strong fascination with nature and often found myself exploring the outdoors, observing the beauty of the world around me. This early connection to nature has had a lasting impact on my work, as I continue to seek out and capture its essence in my photography and art.
In addition to my artistic pursuits, I was captivated by films and storytelling from a young age. I would spend hours watching movies, analyzing their narratives, and imagining my own stories. This passion eventually led me to study film producing and screenwriting, allowing me to turn my childhood dreams into a professional career.
My interest in metaphysical concepts and spirituality also began early on. I was intrigued by the deeper questions of existence and the unseen forces that shape our lives. This curiosity has influenced my artistic vision, as I strive to create works that resonate on a metaphysical level and evoke a sense of wonder and introspection.
Overall, growing up, I was a blend of creativity, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the world around me. These qualities have continued to shape my journey as an artist and professional, driving me to explore new horizons and express my unique perspective through my work.
