Today we’d like to introduce you to Brownstone Boys
Hi Barry & Jordan, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Almost eight years ago, we purchased our first home together, a brownstone in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford Stuyvescent, just seven months into dating. We started blogging about our experience, and soon, we had thousands of people reading our blog, inquiring about our processes, and asking us to renovate their homes. Neither of us was a full-time designer to start–Barry was working in software sales & Jordan was managing marketing for an icecream company–but we quickly realized we could turn this into a career, and so, we did. Since then, we’ve renovated nearly 30 homes in New York, launched bespoke design collaborations, and built out a digital media business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We wouldn’t call them struggles, but we’ve certainly had our fair share of learning moments. Our business has scaled on both the design and digital media side in ways we are extremely grateful for, but it’s required us to learn quickly. Building out the right team and figuring out a balance between design & digital that works for us has been imperative to the success of our overall business model.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a Brooklyn-based design couple with a passion for preserving, renovating, and restoring historic homes. Our specialty is maintaining historic charm and timeless tradition, while also seamlessly integrating modern flair and convenience. We have become the go-to for repairing damaged details like original wood and marble, while also giving these homes the breath of fresh air they need to adequately serve a homeowner in the 21st century.
What makes you happy?
So many things come to mind–a bold color used in an unexpected way, freshly restored wood, the look on a client’s face when a project is completed and a vision has come to life–but truly, the thing that takes the cake has to be the community in Brooklyn. New York has given us so much, and our neighborhood in Brooklyn is one we are incredibly proud to be apart of. Being known for the way we celebrate and show up for our community brings us an immeasurable amount of joy.
