Today we’d like to introduce you to Tena Fernandez
Hi Tena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As the youngest of six children, I often found myself in the shadows of my older siblings, inheriting their outgrown belongings and constantly being compared to them. My voice was frequently dismissed, and in time, I chose silence as a means of self-preservation, speaking only when absolutely necessary.
My silence, however, was not just a response to being overshadowed—it was a shield against the pain I endured from the age of 7 to 13. Molested by those entrusted with my care, I developed a deep mistrust of authority figures, save for my parents. This mistrust was my way of protecting myself from further harm. The abuse only ended when I reached a point where I contemplated ending either my life or that of my abusers. That day marked a turning point in my life, driving me toward a career in social work—a field where I could advocate for and protect those who, like me, had been voiceless.
My career truly began to flourish when I moved back to Jamaica and transitioned into private social work. I embraced a flexible work model long before it became commonplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was during this challenging time that I heeded God’s call, which led to remarkable growth in my business. My relationship with God deepened, unlocking a desire for Christ that culminated in my second book, Unlocking Desire: A Real-Talk Guide on Shifting from a Life of Duty to One of Desire.
This book opened doors I never imagined, connecting me with a tribe of Author CEOs and leading to collaborations with my coach, Crystal Daye—aptly known as “The Millionaire Coach.” These experiences have helped me embrace my true self and elevate my best self. Today, I stand as a bestselling author, double-nominated indie author, and serial entrepreneur, riding the wave of success while remaining grounded in my faith and purpose.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to success has been anything but smooth. Along the way, I’ve encountered numerous bumps and blockages. As an introvert, I’ve always preferred to remain in the background, a position that allowed me to avoid judgment and the exhausting task of constantly explaining myself to others. However, this tendency also hindered my ability to fully showcase who I am and what I offer.
At times, I became complacent with my earnings, feeling no urgency to push myself for more. I also struggled with the fear of being perceived as a “lover of money,” often undercharging for my services to avoid seeming “greedy.”
It wasn’t until one of my coaches enlightened me that I realized the true issue wasn’t with my business—it was with my perception of my own worth. They helped me see that everything we do is tied to what we desire, and if we settle in one state, we will remain there. This revelation pushed me to acknowledge the value of my work and the impact it has on my clients. Understanding my worth has been a pivotal shift, allowing me to break free from the limitations I had unknowingly placed on myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a Serial Entrepreneur, Author, Project Coordinator, Adjunct Lecturer, and Master Social Worker, my work has always centered on creating safe spaces for the underserved, disadvantaged, and misunderstood—especially youth. In my private practice, I offer one-on-one counseling, family counseling, and organizational support to those seeking insight into effectively engaging with these populations. My approach is rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Talk Therapy, and a strength-based framework, allowing me to highlight my clients’ inner strengths while guiding them through practical goal-setting and skill development to address their challenges.
What truly sets me apart in my field is the depth of connection I cultivate with my clients. Rather than maintaining a stoic professional distance, I strive to be relatable and personable, fostering a deep level of trust and open communication. This approach has enabled me to build strong, lasting relationships with those I serve, making a meaningful impact on their lives and empowering them to navigate their unique challenges with confidence.
