Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Perry
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I don’t know if I can really be brief because of how long the journey has been and is still going! BUT, I started braiding in about 2019 while I was on Fisk University’s campus. I would do my own hair all the time and people would ask me if I could do there’s so I would. I’ve been braiding for about 4-5 years. The main thing that has helped with building my brand is content creation. It has helped me boost my clientele and following on social platforms. It has even allowed me to market myself in other areas outside of where I live. I really became a content creator unknowingly which has helped my cross over to the youtube platform to be a smooth transition. So I am now currently doing both youtube and a travel braider.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have experienced many trials and tribulations over these past years while building my brand. From lack of support from others, losing friends, moving back to my hometown (chicago), building new clientele from nothing, procrastination, trial and error on many things, to even learning how to take care of myself even when there’s a goal to get to and not overworking myself to the point of burn out. The journey of being an entrepreneur is not as easy and straight forward as most would like to make it seem. It comes with a lot of hiccups but the rewards for continuing become greater than any of the struggles.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would like to look at myself as a creator for sure. I specialize in braiding but I am well equipped in other areas, which is why I like to identify myself as a creator. Braiding in itself is an amazing art form. The symmetry and precision you have to use is so important. I believe what sets me apart from a lot of other people that may be in my industry is the fact that if we didn’t need money in this world, it’s still something I would do for free and still absolutely love. It’s the ability to transform someone and make them feel good about themselves that does it for me. Then there’s the technique that has to be learned for each braiding style, which is so unique. It would be a great hobby of mine.
Also, of course i’m a youtuber so with that, I mainly focus on lifestyle, fashion, tutorials, and more. I have so much more content and collaborations coming that I am so excited to show the world.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the next 5-10 years I can see there definitely being a shift in the hair industry. Even the vibe of today’s hair industry is a repeat of the 90s/2000s, with the different creative braid designs. There was a point in time where you almost got laughed at for having a design in your head. But, the only difference in the hair industry from back then to now is that content creation is now a thing.
The shift that I believe will happen is that us women will go back to big hair. For example right now, there’s the aesthetic of very sleek looks. I can gradually see mega volume and big hair making it’s come back along with natural hair. There was a phase where natural hair was the main focus and then wigs began to take over. So, I believe that there’s always going to be a shift in any industry within 5-10 years time. Things that were done years ago always make a come back.
