Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Hill.
Hi Spencer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Spencer Hill and I am a first generation race car driver from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I caught the racing bug early, diving into the sport head first at just 8 years old, driving go karts, before I even had a driver’s license. From that very first race, feeling the rush of speed and the thrill of danger, I was hooked and immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Today, I’m grateful to have raced and won hundreds of races and numerous championships across various car types and series’ throughout the U.S. Currently, I compete in Sprint Car racing, which involves incredibly powerful, lightweight cars built for short tracks on dirt. These cars actually carry a power-to-weight ratio similar and sometimes more than that of Formula 1 cars.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Unfortunately, the sport of Sprint Car racing has a way of humbling you as well. In November of 2024, I was involved in a very scary racing incident at Vado Speedway Park, just north of El Paso, Texas, where I crashed into a concrete wall at a high rate of speed. The impact broke my back in four different places, and the car immediately caught on fire. Luckily, I was able to get out of the car before getting burnt, but I have had a long road of recovery with my spine injury. Since the wreck, I have miraculously been able to make a steady recover and am working closely with doctors to begin the next steps needed to get back behind the wheel.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
One of my longtime goals since I started racing was to work hard to help the next generation of racers. As I continue to recover from my injuries sustained in my wreck last year, I have put a focus on using my experience to help coach up and coming drivers. I am happy to share my trials and tribulations when these younger kids to help make their growth through the sport as smooth as possible.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My best advice to anyone that is looking to become a race car driver is to simply go to your local race track and offer your help to others in the pit area. You would be surprised with the power of networking and “getting your hands dirty” when it comes to meeting the right person to help you succeed in your own racing career. There are many situations where a young driver has volunteered their time to a team and then has been offered some sort of driving opportunity down the road to reward their hard work ethic. Don’t expect that to always be the case, but it never hurts to show your character to others and make those connections.
