Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Pribis
Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
That’s a big question! Well, I’m actor, host, and content creator based out of New York City. I would say that I discovered my love for performing and storytelling when I was a teenager. I sang in the church choir, started participating in school plays, went to theater camp, begged my parents for voice lessons… and then I got scouted from my high school’s production of Les Miserables and was invited to audition for Broadway (and got cast)! That gave me the confidence I needed to pursue the arts as a career, so I applied and got accepted into NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. From there, I stayed in New York City and auditioned while working in hospitality. Slowly, I started building up my resume by self submitting for student films and theatre, and eventually I was able to get an agent and started being seen for larger opportunities. I also got sober when I hit my 30th birthday, and I think that was a real turning point for me, because I had more energy to invest in my career. The other thing that’s been a real gamechanger for me has been creating my own content, from writing a pilot, to making videos for social media. It’s given me the ability to leave hospitality and make art full time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh definitely not! Pursuing an artistic career is HARD. There is A LOT of rejection. I think they say that out of every 80 auditions, you can expect to book ONE. That’s essentially 79 unpaid interview. It takes some seriously thick skin to keep going after all of those “no’s.” There’s a lot of self doubt and financial instability. Personally, like I mentioned, I also battled drug and alcohol addiction. It was very easy to get swept into the lifestyle of working in nightlife, and very hard to get out.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud of my transparency! As a creator, I’ve really valued building my platform on honesty. Whether that means I’m offering a glimpse behind the curtain into working actor life or talking about my recovery journey, I think it’s important not to glamorize these topics, but instead offer a realistic view that serves to motivate others to keep going.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Seneca once said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” I fully believe you make your own luck. I have had many crazy things happen which one might attribute to luck. For instance, I was interviewed on The Ellen Show because of a silly informercial I did. I also landed a job hosting a random little game show called HQ Trivia, which randomly skyrocketed to popularity. But the only reason these “right place, right time” stories happened, is because I was putting myself out there consistently in the first place.
