Today we’d like to introduce you to Richy Sánchez Ayala.
Hi Richy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in the Dominican Republic and immigrated to New York where I majored in Fine Art. After obtaining my Bachelor’s I decided to relocate to San Francisco to pursuit a Masters degree in Visual Development from Academy of Art University. Since then I have been avidly illustrating all sorts of books and participating in art shows both nationally and internationally.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all smooth. Art is a difficult path. Some periods are slow and demotivating. The process of becoming a professional is also extremely painstaking. The learning is not an upward straight line, it zig zags and increases slowly over time. There have been times where I have felt like switching careers many times but I always end up falling in love with it all over again.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in book and editorial illustration as well as concept art. I love creating worlds and using visually striking colors to tell a story. I really respect the power of a single image, and I strive to be as impressive as possible within a pictorial composition. My style is very bold, colorful and draws from my personal experiences as a Caribbean artist/immigrant. My culture tends to always show up in my work one way or another.
I have illustrated many children’s books so far and have been doing amazing work with my agents and clients. Some of those books have been awarded and I am extremely proud of them: “Only for a Little While” , “Stars in My Crown”, “Mami’s Magic Words”, to name a few.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can connect with me through any social media or through my website. I love collaborating and working creatively in a team environment. I would love to connect with writers, producers, and directors in order to bring more stories to life.
