Today we’d like to introduce you to Ozzie Mandias
Hi Ozzie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
This is actually from my bio on mixcloud.com/ozziemandias.
I have loved music ever since I could walk. There is a story that my mother shares how I showed her how to work a turntable when I was super youngling. When I got to junior high school I learned how to play the trumpet. I learned how to play very quickly and became the best trumpet player in class.
Once in high school, at age 14, I made my first mixed tape, by listening to the radio and recording the music from the radio shows. Not too long after, I found myself in front of a pair turntables learning how to spin.
My mother didn’t have the disposable income to buy me DJ equipment. And back then, equipment was very expensive. But I was determined. Because I loved music so much, I was able to convince the local roller skating rink to let me come in and practice before and between sessions.
Unfortunately, that became problematic and had to stop. However, because I knew so many DJs, I decided that the next best thing to stay connected was to do events. From doing hip hop events to quickly transitioning to house music events, music has always been part of my life and my therapy.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Honestly, is anything ever a smooth road? When. you find something that you love and want to make money at it when it’s not popular, of course it’s going to be rough and rugged.
The struggle is the struggle; part of paying ones dues I suppose. Like other house music DJs, I love the music so much that there was a time that I would do things for free; for the love of the culture.
However, as you mature and learn more and more about yourself, you begin to see and understand life better, nurture your craft and turn your craft more into a business, as it should have been done years ago.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Besides the love of house music, DJing and aspiring music producer, which by the way, I did release one track years ago, [link] https://www.reverbnation.com/ozziemandias, I have an IT background. I am currently in the process of finishing up my undergraduate degree and will be going into a Phd program with a focus in Materials Science.
How do you think about happiness?
Continuous learning to help self and helping others. Why? Well one because it feels good to help others. Secondly, everyone needs a helping hand.
