Today we’d like to introduce you to Onur Kirimli.
Hi Onur, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been deeply inspired by the beauty and history of handwoven textiles, particularly kilims and rugs. Growing up in Turkey, I was surrounded by artisans who poured their heart and soul into their craft, and that connection to tradition stayed with me.
When I moved to New York City, I realized there was a unique opportunity to bridge these two worlds—introducing the timeless craftsmanship of Turkish rugs to an audience that values artistry and individuality. What started as a personal passion turned into Kilim Couture New York, a brand dedicated to curating antique and vintage hand-knotted rugs, kilims, and mid-century decor pieces that truly tell a story.
Each piece in our collection is handpicked from Turkey, ensuring not just quality but also authenticity. Along the way, I’ve worked to build meaningful relationships with the artisans behind these works, proudly supporting their livelihoods and celebrating their heritage.
Today, Kilim Couture New York serves as both a brand and a creative platform, offering unique pieces that bring warmth, texture, and character into homes. It’s been an incredible journey of blending old-world traditions with the energy and sophistication of modern interiors, and I’m excited for what’s to come.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to building Kilim Couture New York has been incredibly rewarding, but it’s been far from a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the balance between preserving tradition and meeting the expectations of a modern, luxury market. Sourcing one-of-a-kind, artisan-made pieces isn’t as straightforward as manufacturing in bulk—it requires time, patience, and a deep understanding of the craft.
Another challenge has been educating customers about the value of handmade rugs. In a market saturated with mass-produced replicas, it’s sometimes difficult to convey the rich history, artistry, and labor that go into creating each piece. Helping clients understand that these aren’t just decorative items but pieces of heritage and craftsmanship has been a key focus for me.
Logistics has also been a hurdle, especially when it comes to shipping fragile, oversized pieces internationally. Ensuring each rug arrives in perfect condition requires meticulous planning, and there have been moments when unexpected delays or costs have tested my resolve.
Finally, as a small business owner, wearing multiple hats—curator, marketer, logistician, and customer service representative—has been a learning curve. But each obstacle has taught me something invaluable and shaped the way I approach my work today.
Every challenge has reinforced my commitment to offering something truly unique, and knowing that these rugs become a meaningful part of someone’s home makes it all worthwhile.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At Kilim Couture New York, I specialize in curating and offering a collection of antique and vintage hand-knotted rugs, handwoven kilims, and mid-century kilim decor. Each piece in my collection is artisan-made and meticulously handpicked from Turkey, ensuring it’s not just a beautiful addition to someone’s home but also a true piece of history and craftsmanship.
What sets Kilim Couture apart is the focus on authenticity, quality, and storytelling. Every rug has a story behind it—whether it’s the unique motifs that reflect a weaver’s personal journey or the traditional techniques passed down through generations. I’m most proud of my ability to connect my clients with these meaningful pieces that bring warmth and character to their spaces.
I’m also deeply committed to supporting the artisans behind the craft. By working directly with them, I ensure that their skills are celebrated and their livelihoods are sustained. This relationship adds another layer of meaning to the work I do—it’s not just about selling rugs but about preserving and promoting a cultural legacy.
What truly sets Kilim Couture apart is the personal touch. Whether it’s working with interior designers through our trade program or helping a customer find the perfect rug for their home, I make it a point to provide exceptional service and create a connection that goes beyond the transaction.
At the heart of it all, my work is about blending tradition with modernity—offering timeless (though I know you prefer avoiding that word!) pieces that fit seamlessly into contemporary interiors while honoring the artistry and history they represent.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Covid-19 crisis was a defining moment for many businesses, including Kilim Couture New York. It taught me the importance of adaptability and the power of connection, even during uncertain times.
One of the biggest lessons was learning to embrace the digital space more fully. With in-person interactions limited, I focused on improving my online presence and creating a more seamless, personalized experience for my clients. I discovered that even without seeing a rug in person, people were still eager to connect with its story—whether through detailed descriptions, high-quality visuals, or virtual consultations.
The crisis also underscored the value of fostering relationships. It became clear that clients weren’t just looking for products—they were seeking a sense of comfort and meaning in their homes. This realization deepened my commitment to providing not only unique, artisan-made pieces but also exceptional service and genuine human connection.
Additionally, I gained a renewed appreciation for the artisans I work with. The pandemic affected their lives significantly, and supporting their livelihoods became even more important. It reminded me of the resilience within the craft community and strengthened my dedication to preserving these traditions.
Ultimately, the experience highlighted the importance of community, creativity, and staying true to one’s values in the face of challenges. It wasn’t easy, but it allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.
