Today we’d like to introduce you to Nina Demarchi
Hi Nina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My desire to be an actor started when I was little, living in a small town in Brazil. It was a faraway dream that seemed impossible. When I turned 14 I moved to the US but my self-esteem as someone who didn’t speak English wasn’t where it needed to be for me to pursue acting. I was terrified of making mistakes and feeling stupid when trying to speak a new language so I ended up getting in my own way. I graduated High School in 2020 when we were all quarantining, during that period I took the time to work on myself, connect with myself, and find out what I really wanted in life. After self-reflecting it was clear that the only career path that I truly wanted was to be an actor. After working on myself and my insecurities I was finally confident enough to follow my dreams. That’s when I started taking acting classes, two years later I moved to New York to follow that path, went to an acting institute for another two years and now I’m living my dream, I’m surrounded by actors and creatives, auditioning every week, working as an actor and enjoying the city. It feels great to have the courage and confidence to do what you want.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Acting is definitely not a smooth road, I already mentioned the insecurities that creep in when you follow this career path. Acting differentiates from other careers because you can’t hide yourself behind anything, you are the canvas where the art is being created, and even tho we play different characters, trained actors know that the truth is, every character is a part of us, and every expression is coming from inside of us, we create the characters but the starting point is ourselves. An important part of being an actor is to understand that becoming a working actor and making a living off of it will take many years, it requires a lot of patience and persistence. Our lives can’t revolve around acting, It is a big part of our lives, but it can’t be the decider of our happiness or financial status, since it is such an unstable career we should plan our next steps with this in mind. Make sure we take care of ourselves while we are climbing this hill. If you are miserable the whole way up, it is not with it. Find a way to be happy where you are right now.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself an actor because that is the field I studied and dedicated my time to, the field in which I feel the most prepared, even tho you can never feel 100% prepared, there’s always more to learn and you are constantly growing as an artist as you grow as a person. I also dabble in other parts of creating. When you are in a place like New York you feel a desire to write stories or even direct them, It feels possible because you see so many people doing it you can’t help if but be inspired. I’m proud of my passion for creating and my work ethic. In my eyes, these are important qualities for an actor.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about New York is how there’s always something going on, whether it is a student film or a major feature film being filmed in the middle of the streets, people are constantly creating art around the city, from a jazz trio in the park to the major museums we have. It is easy to feel inspired in a place like this.
What I like the least about the city is the economic differences we see every day, all the peculiar smells around, and the loud noises in the street. I also don’t feel the safest in some areas when I’m by myself. With all of that being said, I do believe these are problems found in every big city.
