Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelson Host Santiago
Hi Nelson Host, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a huge fan of comics when I was a kid. And I used to draw my own comics. When I was about 6 years old my dad brought home an oil painting set he found at work and gave it to me, which got me interested in painting. As I got older I got into graffiti and I loved painting letters. So the style I have is a combination of comics and graff style.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say struggle but the road is bumpy at times. With all things their ups and downs. But I’m ok with that. I don’t mind putting in the work when it comes to painting, But I do wish I could just paint and not worry about the other stuff that comes with it ( social media, public speaking, selling, etc.)
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work pertains to bringing awareness to the relationship between the United States and Puerto Rico. Also growing up in the Bronx, and domestic violence. I’m not big on protesting or being vocal. But every painting of mine especially with Puerto Rico is my way of protesting and bringing awareness that affects my people.
What does success mean to you?
If I’m ok with how my work comes out, that’s success for me.
