Today we’d like to introduce you to Merril Cledera.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I founded Oden Studio, a design practice in New York City that focuses on branding, visual identities, and digital experiences. My journey began over a decade ago when I first worked as an independent graphic designer. Those early experiences opened my eyes to how design can align creativity with meaning, and I became passionate about using design to tell deeper stories.
As I progressed in my career, I realized I wanted to do more than just create designs — I wanted to shape entire brand experiences that provoke thought and start conversations. This led me to found Oden, where I could bring bold ideas to life and collaborate with a diverse group of emerging talents. We see design as a tool for transformation, and we aim to create work that leaves a meaningful mark, ignites creativity, and breaks new ground.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I worked as an independent graphic designer collaborating with organizations, I realized I craved more than just creating designs based on someone else’s blueprint. It wasn’t enough to work within set boundaries. I wanted to shape those boundaries, build brands from the ground up, and lead teams in crafting designs that fostered real connections.
Although working with established companies brought stability, I often felt my creative freedom was limited. That’s when I decided to focus on branding and visual identity development, which eventually led to the creation of my own design practice.
Founding Oden Studio was a significant milestone for me. It wasn’t just about continuing my craft—it was about creating a space where I could collaborate with independent brands and provide emerging talent with opportunities to thrive. Having not had much mentorship myself, I felt a deep desire to support young professionals and help guide them on their own paths. With Oden, I’ve been able to create meaningful designs while nurturing new talent along the way.
Starting my own business, of course, came with its fair share of challenges. We understand that budget constraints are often a reality for many, and that’s why we believe in mutual respect in every partnership. By respecting each other’s needs and understanding the value we bring, we can work together to achieve a productive and successful collaboration.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Oden Studio, we believe design goes beyond simply making things look good—it’s about crafting stories that resonate and spark genuine connections. What I’m most proud of is how our work creates impact. Each project is an opportunity to shape something that not only defines a brand but also evokes emotions and inspires thought.
What sets us apart is our focus on authenticity over trends. Instead of following the latest design styles, we prioritize creating something fresh, meaningful, and often unexpected. We embrace the experimental and the bold, believing that design should engage people on a deeper level—emotionally and intellectually.
Great design can transform the way people perceive the world around them. It’s not just about how things look, but how they make us feel and think. That’s the power of design—to shift perspectives and open up new creative possibilities.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that creativity flourishes when it’s supported by structure, openness, and exploration. Early on, I realized that structure isn’t limiting—it provides a foundation for ideas to grow. Having a clear plan helps me stay focused, ensuring that creativity is both inspired and thoughtfully executed.
I’ve also learned the value of archiving—collecting physical items that inspire me, like matchbooks or postcards. In a digital world, these tangible reminders help reignite my creativity when needed. Most importantly, staying open to unexpected ideas—whether through collaborations or unplanned encounters—has been essential in my growth, both personally and professionally.
