Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rohwer
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hello you mesmerizing human! I’m so happy that you’re here :) My name is Melissa and I’m an artist from the land of cheese and cows; good ol’ Wisconsin! My husband and I have been married for 10 years and we have 3 beautiful boys together. Family is everything. We also have a rescue pup named Max, two rescue kitties named Nala and Luna, and a sassy beta fish named Dory.
As I was growing up, you could always find me with a sketchbook and pencil. Creating, in any form, filled my soul. Whether it was through visual art, playing the trumpet in band, singing in school and community choir, theater, any forms of creating I could get my hands on. I loved it and fed off of it. Science and the intricacies of math also spoke to my brain. Our brains are a fun, complex place, and I love to showcase that through the artwork.
I graduated from Viterbo University with a BSN in 2014. The wonderful thing about Viterbo is that it’s a liberal arts school, which translated to me that I got to participate in one art class per semester. I’m convinced that this was my saving grace during my college years. I work as a nurse for 7 years, and painted at home in hobby form for the beginning of that time. It was in 2019 that I FINALLY made the decision to treat the art dream as a career and become a professional artist. I filed for my LLC, and it’s been the BEST decision.
In 2020, I had the opportunity to take a step back from healthcare and be home with our 3 young boys and focus on the foundational skills of art ie. figure drawing, color theory, etc. I also started doing more in person art fairs and gallery events during this time. In 2023 I started working part-time at our local library, as well as running the growing art business, and it’s amazing.
If I’m not creating art, you can find me spending time with my family, drinking coffee, face in a book, watching “The Office”, writing, hiking with my dog, and any other adventures that come up.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course, things in life have come up here and there. Medical events, loss, family emergencies, and the current inflation to name a few. Overall though, I’ve found that when you’re disciplined and commit to having your “butt in the chair” (words of Miriam Schulman, art coach and Watercolor Artist), you will feel good and have results. The growth of my business has been slow and sustainable. And I’m very much okay with that :)
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I believe that art tells a story, and you get to write the narrative. Art has the ability to make you think deeper about things, and fell emotions that are intriguing, healing, and thought provoking. Art has a way to touch your soul, and I love that!
I provide artwork for you in many forms! Through my website, you’ll be able to find; Original Artwork, Fine Art Prints, Bookmarks, Stickers, Bundles, Mystery Packs, Wearable Merchandise, and Written Content.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Just that if you have a desire to do or start something, ie. start a business, write a book, make a painting, do an online course, whatever if may be. In my experience, I’ve found that the hardest part is getting started. Once I started, the “how” and other questions and doubts worked itself out. If there’s something you want to do, go ahead and start. The “how” will figure itself out.
