Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Mastren-williams
Hi Mary, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
The short version of my story: My freshman year of high school I walked into an art classroom and I’ve been walking into art classrooms ever since. Over 25 years later, I’m still going strong. It’s been quite a journey.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth ride. I’ve faced my share of rejections and setbacks. It’s tough in the moment, but looking back, those challenges have actually shaped my career. A particular turning point was when I was passed over for a position and then gaslit as to why. That disappointment pushed me to focus on my personal art, which has brought me so much joy and opportunity. It was hard to see the silver lining at the time, but it’s clear now that it was a blessing in disguise.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create vibrant, contemporary watercolor paintings. Watercolor is a challenging medium, and I love pushing its boundaries. I experiment with unexpected color combinations, like hot pink skies and orange skin tones, to create unique and striking pieces.
Right now, I’m working on a new series of monochromatic figurative paintings for an upcoming show, ‘Raw Form,’ at Atithi Studios in Pittsburgh. It’s my biggest show yet, and I’m incredibly proud of the work. Each painting celebrates the beauty of the female form, rendered in a stunning, single color.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Don’t be afraid to reach out. Call artists you admire, ask for feedback, take classes, and connect with other creatives. I’ve built strong relationships and landed exciting projects simply by being proactive. Sometimes, all it takes is a little initiative.
