Today we’d like to introduce you to Marije
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For me, music is life. It is my closest companion and confidante. Music was there for me throughout a difficult childhood as I struggled through bullying, depression, and anxiety. It was there for the good times as well and ultimately became my salvation.
“Music always understands me and helps me understand myself. I am full of thoughts. Without writing them down and making songs out of them, I would be a mess. I just love singing and being on stage, rocking with my band!”
Originally from the Netherlands, I moved with my family to Switzerland when I was 10. Coming from a musical clan, I spent my childhood singing. I first performed on stage at the age of 6 and composed my first original song when I was just 8 years old. Over the years, I have appeared on a number of international reality television shows, including *Kay One – Sängerin Gesucht* (RTL) and *Limits* (SRF). I made my professional solo recording debut in 2016.
I have released a string of popular singles, connecting with fans around the world with electro-pop and dance bangers like 2021’s “Stupid Lie.” Along the way, I became a mother and ditched my record label. In 2023, I reinvented my sound, introducing a guitar-fueled rock & roll edge. Fans love the new vibe and have made my recent single “Phantom” my most successful to date.
On July 12th, I released the brand new single “Insane,” a pop-punk song with a wild tale of the chaotic and sexy ups-and-downs of a rollercoaster love/hate relationship. My music is deeply personal but universally relatable. I see my songs as vehicles for connecting with others, offering support and understanding.
The rock & roll revolution continues. My band and I have new releases planned throughout the year. We also just booked a tour and will be playing gigs throughout Europe this year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a musician has definitely not been a smooth road for me. One of the biggest struggles has been dealing with people never really believing in me. It’s hard to keep pushing forward when those around you doubt your abilities and potential. Financially, being a musician is crazy challenging. There are so many costs involved, and it’s tough to make a steady income, especially in the beginning.
On top of that, I have a 2-year-old daughter, which means I have to juggle my responsibilities as a mother with my career. It’s always a lot of work, balancing rehearsals, recordings, performances, and parenting. But what keeps me going is my will, discipline, and unwavering belief in myself. Despite the obstacles, I am determined to pursue my passion and make my mark in the music world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a rock and metal singer and also a songwriter. I have an amazing band, and I love that I work with professionals who share my focus and goals. My band members are not just colleagues; they are like family to me.
In addition to performing, I also work as a songwriter for others. I help clients in the studio, bringing their songs to life. I love being around musicians and collaborating on creative projects.
I am honestly most proud of not giving up despite facing so many obstacles. I come from a family who never really believed in me, and I was bullied for many years. Yet, I persevered and continued to pursue my passion.
What sets me apart from others is probably my way of not overthinking but just going for things (I overthink after!) Even though the future is very unclear, I do what I believe in and reach my goals if I want to.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always in my own world, dreaming, singing, and dancing the whole day. I always wanted to be a singer, and I’ve always been deeply passionate and full of feelings and emotions – I was always in love with someone as well. My world was like a bubble that probably no one really understood, but it always gave me safety and the ability to reach for my dreams.
My childhood wasn’t easy, and I always tried to focus on my goals to make it through difficult times. I’ve always been creative and had a vivid imagination. I even wanted to be able to fly, haha! My intense passion and emotional depth, along with my creativity, helped me navigate the challenges and kept me striving towards my dreams.
