Today we’d like to introduce you to Mai Benezra
Hi Mai, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Acting and the performing arts have always been a core part of my life. Growing up in Israel, I spent my childhood singing, dancing, writing, and acting. I began writing plays and performing for my family, and I also performed at community events and took acting classes from a young age. At 15, I performed in a production featured at Israel’s largest theaters, Habima and Cameri. From the very beginning, I knew this was the career I wanted to pursue, and nothing has changed that determination.
As I grew, I explored on-camera acting and found it just as exciting and rewarding as theater. Both film and theater challenge and inspire me in different ways, and I am passionate about both. I am especially drawn to musical theater, as it allows me to combine my love for acting, singing, dancing and playing instruments like the piano and guitar.
I moved to New York City and studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute, where I delved deeply into the technique and history of acting. This experience helped me grow both as an artist and an individual, allowing me to discover more richness and depth within myself. Although I learned so much, I was left wanting more, as there is always more to learn,
For me, acting is more than just performing—it is a way to inspire, express, and connect. It feels like magic. Acting allows me to explore freedom, creativity, and even healing. While in New York, I also developed an interest in directing, which led me to write, direct, and star in three short films that were featured in festivals. One of these films earned me a Best Actress award.
I continue to work on a variety of acting projects in New York, including an indie film, a series, and more. I’m excited to take on new opportunities and bring my true self to every role I play.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The acting industry is, after all, an industry, and as an actor focused on the craft, it’s something I haven’t always had the opportunity to learn about. I continue to expand my understanding of the business side of acting. One of the main challenges I’ve encountered is accepting that, while the industry moves quickly and opportunities can arise unexpectedly, sometimes progress takes time. It’s a reminder that even with effort and perseverance, things may not always happen right away. The key, for me, is to continually practice enjoying the journey, rather than solely focusing on the end goal in my career.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the things I’m most proud of is my belief in myself and my determination. I am honest with myself about where I may lack, but I trust that I’ll continue to improve and succeed. A key strength of mine is my comfort in connecting with others and putting myself out there, both as an actor and a filmmaker. This allows me to create opportunities for collaboration and further my career.
What matters most to you?
One of the things that matter most to me is presence—being present in the moment. It is crucial for acting and for my life itself. The ability to be immersed in what’s happening right now is priceless, especially in today’s era, where everything moves so fast and we’re pulled in so many directions. Presence allows you to truly live, and that’s where the magic happens.
