Today we’d like to introduce you to Luke Donald
Hi Luke, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started playing guitar when I was around ten or so, but before that I would go see my dad sing in his band. Both my mom and dad loved music and because my dad sang and played some guitar, I had interest early on. From there, I continued to chase that passion of guitar and music and taught myself to play guitar and sing with some help from my dad and tried to start my own band. I encouraged my friends in school to play an instrument and start a band. We formed our first band and played some talent shows and battle of the bands and that was the start of it. We kept playing together all through school and recorded our first album in high school as Iron Lung Remedy and disbanded a couple of years after High School.
From there, I played in a few projects and eventually joined Daycare Swindlers and made Reradiate with them. Around that time, I was also writing for another project that would eventually become Cursor.
Cursor has become my main focus musically and we just released our debut record Apparitions this past May.
Outside of music, I work as a school counselor supporting students follow their passions and as a mental health professional. I have my B.S. in Psychology and M. Ed in Counseling and Human Development from George Mason University.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it hasn’t. I am fortunate to always have support from family and loved ones but with anything worth fighting for, you are going to hit some challenges.
With music, it’s a lot of ups and downs to say the least. I’ve faced a lot of self doubt and challenges with trying to make everything work with band members, shows, promotion, writing music, etc. I also find myself struggling with wondering if anyone truly cares but at the end of it all, I just try to remind myself why I do what I do, and it is ultimately because I love it.
With my education, I am a first generation college student and there were many challenges navigating admission, enrollment, financial aid that I had to figure out. I come from a small town and neither of parents finished high school, so I really had to figure a lot out on my own but it all worked out and I can share that perspective with my students.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I sing and play guitar in my band Cursor and play guitar and sing backup with Daycare Swindlers.
Cursor has released, Seeking Connection, Pharos, Reaper, and Apparitions and with Daycare Swindlers I helped create the album Reradiate.
I specialize in song arrangement, big choruses, melody, and creating songs with a moody vibe. I also handle graphic artwork for releases and edit our music videos and content.
I’m most proud of the latest album Apparitions by Cursor because I feel like it’s my best work up to this point but I’m always writing so I would argue most artist feel their newest work is the best.
Not sure what sets me apart, I just do what I do and stay true to myself and that instinct that drives me with the decisions I make for my art.
