Today we’d like to introduce you to Leeana Hergenreder
Hi Leeana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I felt called to Coach others after working through my own wellness journey. Moving my body and diving deeper into my spiritual understanding was a direct result of needing alternatives to medicine with mental health and trauma needs. Exercise and energy work were tools I sought before I offered them! I have natural leadership skills and found it easy to teach group Fitness classes when I first began. While I do enjoy a room full of students to move and work with, I knew that more personalized work was for me. I began teaching yoga and CrossFit as a way to better connect with people and help them find safe, effective form. The balance of group classes and one-on-one work helps me stay connected to individual needs while also prioritizing the benefits of team work.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a health and wellness coach has many rewards, but also many setbacks. C’est la vie! I feel inspired by my clients regularly, making it easy to show up for work. I also feel like working with many different kinds of people with different needs allows me to continue learning and exploring various science journals, movements, and methodologies. However, our society is very obsessed with aesthetics over performance. As someone who wants to hold integrity for my clients, I don’t sell or offer bogus plans, products, or diets that cause more harm than good, or are mass produced with little consideration into actual determinants of a person’s health. Being a coach committed to genuine health, not just thinness, does require a lot of work with not as high of a payout. But honest work always pays off in the end, one way or another. I’ve met incredible people along this journey that gave me a payout greater than money.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work as a whole-body health coach. Rather than submitting to toxic diet industry standards, I focus on true health with my clients, from the inside out. My approach to wellness provides my clients with a positive mindset and supportive attitude, to help them find food and body freedom that they have always been capable of. My personal experience is that I found healing in moving my body, being more conscious about what I put into my body, creating boundaries around who I share my time and energy with, and learning to say “no.” I hope that my time with clients, even if it’s only a 60 mins class, offers them the courage to say, “I can heal- or get stronger- too.”
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the recent obsession with GLP-1’s, I feel like the health and wellness industry will be bombarded again with toxic messages of unattainable perfection and self worth being found in skin-deep measures. My hope is that more coaches like myself will rise up to remind people that we are multifaceted creatures, with the right to care for ourselves in a way that brings us vitality, not self shame. Many decades have presented the new “it” drug or diet, so this is nothing new. But as time continues on, I hope the past teaches us that self loathing doesn’t lead to self love, and that diets fail because our bodies have a preferred place of homeostasis, despite what size your jeans or neighbor might say.
