Hi Kelly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
By my second pregnancy, I was OVER the maternity clothes on the market! They were uncomfortable, unflattering, and expensive! I had a background in Merchandise Product Development from FIDM so I decided I was going to find a solution to my frustration. After much testing and prototypes, The Momper was born! The Momper is a one-piece that met all my requirements- super soft and comfortable, stylish, versatile for dressing whatever the season and the design is meant to be worn throughout all nine months of pregnancy. As an added bonus, I also created Mompers for children of all ages to match!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge I have had as a mother and business owner is work-life balance. When I first started my business I still worked a full-time job and I constantly worried I was not spending enough time with my kids. After finding events and markets were the strongest marketing channels to grow my business, I made the decision to bring the kids with me. This allowed me to work, but also spend time with them and show them entrepreneurship first hand. Our family has traveled across the country selling Mompers and making memories on the road together. My youngest has been a market kid since she was born and I feel very lucky to say that she still loves it!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Momper Romper is disrupting the maternity apparel space with a simple all-in-one design to replace uncomfortable, unflattering, overpriced maternity clothes. What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Step out of your comfort zone- yes, I know this sounds ironic coming from a comfort brand, but the only way in finding your core customers or what they think of your products is to have that conversation directly with them. I started by meeting my customers at local farmers markets and events. At first, this was super uncomfortable for me being more of an introvert. Your mind starts to race with negative thoughts like- are they going to hate my products? Am I going to waste my money on this event and not sell anything? Will they think my prices are too high? When those negative thoughts creep in, shut them off and just do the uncomfortable things anyway. The start of any business is going to be a lot of learning from your mistakes. Strive to constantly be improving and success will be your outcome.
