Today we’d like to introduce you to Karmessa Padgett
Hi Karmessa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up in Mobile, AL, I am no stranger to music! I distinctly remember being in awe of my grandmother’s voice. She had a strong, beautiful voice which reminded you of Mahalia Jackson. My grandmother, Myrtis, would sing all around the house and in church. She would bring the congregation to tears as she ministered though song. That specifically is what lit a fire in me for singing at an early age.
My humble beginnings of performing in community ensembles & school choirs, prepared and afforded me a University Choir Scholarship to Alabama A&M University. Little did I know, my collegiate musical growth was grooming me to live my dreams!
Currently a recording artist, a lead singer for Element XI and a background vocalist for Season 2, American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard, I’m no newcomer to the stage. My unique sound is a mixture of R&B/Pop/Soul, with a speciality in intricate harmonies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! However, I knew it wouldn’t be easy, so some of the obstacles didn’t come as a surprise.
I have had some losses and some wins, but I choose to celebrate and be grateful for the wins!
I’ve lost money, lost hope, done terribly for auditions, battled with internal demons, but the older, more confident and more knowledgeable I became of my craft and the business, it became easier.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Outside of being an artist, my career still revolves around music.
When I’m not performing, I’m fulfilling my role as Director of Operations at Maitland Conservatory, a Modern Arts School located in Huntsville, AL. I’m also a board member of the Huntsville Music Board, a governing body tasked with implementing and prioritizing the road map provided to nurture the City’s growing music industry.
I am extremely blessed and grateful to be able to be a part and make an impact in my community’s creatives of all ages, that’s what I’m most proud of. Once upon a time I thought having a completely music centered career was only a possibility in my prayers and dreams, thankfully it’s my reality.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In this industry, being a risk taker is MANDATORY! There are millions of singers trying to make it, so you have to make some sacrifices and take some risks to be heard through all the noise.
As an independent artist, if you’re not willing to put your all into it, then you’re most likely going to become stagnant and uninspired.
