Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn Mccolez
Hi Kaitlyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a small scale business owner, specializing in gourmet cookies and brownies. I’ve been working hard over the years to get my name out there and be known. I started working on my dreams one day during the Covid pandemic when everyone was shut in at home and I needed a way to keep my mind occupied.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth ride but it taught me things on the way and for that I wouldn’t trade my journey here.
At the launch of Fatty K’s I had no idea how to price things so that was a struggle, I had items to expensive, then changing to not making enough to break even( I was a hot mess back then, thank you to the customers who stuck by me).
Another struggle I’ve faced, recipe testing! Finding out what flavors go together and what cookies are a total flop, for example candy corn and cookies don’t mix well. Not all ideas are winners!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One thing that I’m most proud of about running Fatty K’s has been seeing my dream come to life slowly, seeing the hard work I’ve put in pay off. It’s always a highlight of my day when I’ll be at a market and someone will come up to my booth and say “there you are, we’ve been looking for you.” Or “we were hoping fatty k would be here”. Something so small has the biggest impact in my day.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others would have to be that I continue to improve in enhancing my desserts and my ability to bring the best quality of treats to everyone at a reasonable price. I try to keep things interesting by changing up the menu.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was a pretty shy child, that really hasn’t changed much depending on who you ask. I had a few different things I was interested in, I loved being outside digging in my parents landscaping looking for different bugs, riding bikes around the neighborhood. But my favorite thing to do growing up was being in the kitchen, weather it be watching my parents cook dinner, helping them stir the pot, chop up ingredients. Or going over to my great aunts house while they baby sat me and my siblings were we’d watch Disney VHS’s and bake cookies while we waited to get picked back up.
