Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Salinas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an immigrant from Honduras. I came to the US with the intention of realizing the American dream. I was 17 when I arrived at Newark, NJ with the excitement and fear that came along with starting a new life in a strange country. I started by learning English and then enrolling at a county college in NJ. I then transferred to Rutgers University where I got my PhD in Food Science. After college I worked for several of the largest CPG companies in the US as a Food product developer culminating my career in corporate as a director for product innovation at Nestle. It was at this last company where I was able to work on an area that was of high interest to me: Active Performance Nutrition. There I was able to learn how to make products for athletes to improve their sports performance. I also obtained a Sports Nutrition degree from the International Olympic Committee. I have always had affinity for sports ever since I was a kid, swimming for the Honduran national team, and later on in college, weightlifting. This passion for sports and nutrition, and food product innovation led me to start my own company, Perfect Life Nutrition. The idea was to create a snack that was not just great tasting but also had the nutrients I knew where needed by people like me, who wants to live healthy, active lives. I launched my first Nutrition protein Snack, Pnuff Crunch Peanut Puffs, in 2018 and have been developing the brand ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest issues we have had is manufacturing. Our snack is made from real Peanuts (allergen) and it was very difficult to find a facility that would handle peanuts in their lines without cross contaminating other products. We have had to change facilities three times due to this issue before we decided to invest on our own manufacturing facility. This constant changing of manufacturing affected our sales and growth to the point of almost put us out of business due to not having inventory to sale for long periods of time. Having our own facility has been great from the point of view that we now control our production and don’t have to worry about allergen cross contamination.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
