Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Moulton
Hi Josh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Started painting when I was 3 yrs old in my Dad’s studio in our house. He was a prefessional artist. Illustrator in NYC during the 1940’s- 60’s for all of the ad agencies. By the time I was born he was doing portraits, landscapes, abstracts in our home and I learned from him.
I pursued it because I had the ability and enjoyed it. It was and is my calling. Hard work and dedication led me to where I am now. I was a Studio Art major at a small liberal arts college with a 4 yr art scholarship. I started selling my paintings in high school. Around 2005 I was picked up by several galleries around the country (Santa Fe, NYC, Chicago, Winnetka). In 2011 I decided to open my own gallery in Chicago.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nothing in life is a smooth road. Obviously, the art world gets a bad wrap because it is not a common field/profession where people can make a living doing it. I get it…. but, like any profession, it boils down to how hard you work, how good you are at your profession and how much risk/investment you want to put into it.
Struggles are really learning to be patience waiting for customers to come through on things they’ve told you they want when, as a business, you have daily and weekly expenses and bills to pay. Cash flow is always random but luckily it always comes through… annually, because the product is strong and people want it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I take a lot of pride in being diverse as a painter. When I was approaching galleries right out of college… they all wanted a genre or style of work that “represents you”. Something they can tell a customer this is a typical Moulton. But as an artist and someone who sees creativity, beauty, possible paintings in ANY subject… I did not want to be pigeonholed.
I can do everything. Super realistic city scenes, people/portraits, rural farms, nature, abstracts. You name it… I can do it. I’m not a one hit wonder.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Chicago has been good to me because I have worked hard to utilize all of it’s resources. We still get a ton of tourists which is great. Office buildings have struggled post covid and work from home changes… so I am not seeing as much purchasing from those areas. To decorate offices…
It is still a very vibrant, beautiful city. It has it’s struggles with political leaders, crime prevention, taxes, business friendly costs (not so much).
