Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Deer Heart
Hi Jordan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When I began my journey, I didn’t know that that was what what I was doing. It began by wanting to heal and improve myself, so I really dedicated myself to that in a way I never had before. I had to put myself out there and try things I wasn’t sure about, be willing to get uncomfortable and commit to the long game. This was all in the form of EMDR therapy, breathwork and energy healing. And though it was really hard, I saw results and kept going with it. And the more I kept going the more I became interested in how it worked. And opportunities to take trainings arose. Which were still big leaps of faith financially and I didn’t intend to go professional with any of them. I just wanted to know for myself, and be trained in tools to support myself as best I could.
And I think that mindset, being willing to get uncomfortable and committing to the long game, perfectly prepared me for starting my own practice. Doing this work feels like a calling, and the joy that comes from it is amazing. But it is a LOT of work and as any small business owner will tell you, it’s hard and it’s nonstop. This is what stops most people from progressing past their first or second year. Committing is hard, and it requires faith in yourself. And we all struggle with doubts and fears. But it doesn’t work if you’re not all in.
I’d also say I followed the breadcrumbs. The next thing in front of me, then the next thing and then the next thing. And that’s what I’m still doing today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! Is it for anyone?
It was hard to keep showing up. I had no support, savings or any kind of financial safety net. I was completely on my own. Which in a way made it so I had to keep going. Giving up was not an option.
Being seen was a big one for me. I am an introvert, and this job requires visibility. Using my voice. So I had a lot of healing to do around that. I always say that having your own business is the biggest spiritual practice you can have because whatever your wounds or fears are, they will come up. Money, scarcity mentality, being seen, using your voice, boundaries, you name it.
And essentially I am a freelancer. I work session to session. So it can be quite challenging, especially now with costs going up and the economy is crumbling and everyone is in survival mode.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For nearly the past 10 years, I have been working as a healing facilitator, shamanic medicine woman, and herbalist. I was given the medicine name of Deer Heart Ix Mazatl Ol-si by my teacher Irma StarSpirit Turtle Woman. My healing work, my ancestry (Yaqui indigenous, Mexica, Spanish & Welsh), my connection to the natural world and NYC are part of my work, no matter the medium or modality. I create plant and stone medicine to heal on multidimensional levels and my work draws upon my Yaqui and Puerto Rican heritage and connection with the natural world. I am most known for my 13th Octave work, as a Master Teacher, and my Ancestral healing work. I am also a Reiki Master and practice Pranayama Breathwork, Shamanic journeywork and limpiezas, and Tarot as tools for soul transformation. I have taught courses and facilitated healing work for humans all over the world for nearly a decade.
I am also the artist/creator of the upcoming oracle deck Oracle of the Constellations. I use my roots, intuitive + channeling abilities and earth connection to open myself to ideas and inspiration, and bring them to life through my drawings and paintings. It is all connected because it is all creative expression and I am here to embody my multi-faceted self, and inspire and uplift others through these expressions. My creative process specifically includes a lot of meditation, visioning, working with flower essences, and working with my spirit guides.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Well I’m a believer in making your own luck. Getting out there and meeting people and making connections. I was able to do this through years of vending and reading tarot at maker’s markets and craft fairs, and different healing events. And I would see the same people at different events, and friendships and connections naturally arose over time. One thing always leads to the other ( following the breadcrumbs) and it really is about who you know. “Networking” – but doing it organically.
When I first started out, I knew no one. I had no “in”, no connections whatsoever and I viscerally remember feeling alone and at a loss for how I would ever make connections. And it’s hard to put myself out there sometimes, something many people understand. But that is the way, because if people don’t know you or know about your work, how would they know that you have services to offer?
