Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanny Navarro
Hi Johanny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up immersed in music, thanks to my father, a Latin jazz composer, arranger, and pianist. Our living room was filled with the sounds of his piano and compositions, which my brothers and I would dance and sing along to. This early exposure, combined with my father’s teachings about the rich music traditions of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, deeply influenced me. I became fascinated by the aesthetics of Caribbean music and its spirited rhythms and energy.
As I matured as a composer, I sought to blend classical music traditions with Caribbean aesthetics. This journey of exploration helped me craft a unique sound that reflects my heritage and artistic vision. My influences are diverse, ranging from my cultural background to nature and even food. Inspiration strikes in various forms, and when it does, it ignites a compelling need within me to create and share new music.
Today, I continue to pursue my passion as a freelance composer and a professor at Universidad Sagrado Corazón. When I’m not composing, I enjoy gardening, beach trips, and cooking. Daily, I strive to bring hope and joy through my music to those who listen.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Growing up and working as a woman in Puerto Rico, a territory with limited opportunities, has presented significant challenges. Language barriers and cultural biases have often minimized my chances for advancement. Despite these obstacles, I’ve remained dedicated to my art, striving to overcome these barriers and carve out a space for my voice and my music.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I compose classical music, specializing in opera, orchestral, and chamber music. I’m known for integrating Afro-Caribbean musical aesthetics into classical compositions, infusing my work with vibrant rhythms and energy. My compositions are deeply influenced by my cultural heritage, aiming to bring the spirited essence of Caribbean music to classical audiences. I take pride in creating a unique sound that reflects my roots and experiences. What sets me apart is my ability to blend these distinct musical traditions, crafting pieces that are both innovative and deeply rooted in my ancestry.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to never give up and stay true to myself and my music, regardless of others’ opinions or demands. It’s essential to remain authentic and steadfast to your own artistic vision. I believe that integrity is what defines and distinguishes a great piece of art.
