Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Tschetter
Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began unexpectedly when a colleague of a colleague needed support on rolling out a new project–so I serendipitously secured my first contract. I hadn’t planned to run my own business full-time, but that initial contract sparked a passion. I spent my early years honing my skills (additional training, coaching, gaining certifications). About two years in, I decided to elevate my business practices, focusing on what it meant to run a business, not just work for myself. I said, “Yes!” to a lot of different things, which helped me discover what I enjoyed and disliked. I love the flexibility in my work and the ability to try new things. While my niche will likely continue to adapt over time, I know that I love working with managers and teams in mission-driven organizations. You can learn more about my background on my website: tschetterconsulting.com.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most people, there have been smooth patches and rough patches! Early on, someone advised me to commit to at least two years to truly understand the business highs and lows. That was crucial because the rollercoaster of having loads of business one month and none the next was a lot to grapple with. It took almost three years to find consistent balance and build a steady network of work. I had to juggle growing my skills and learning the ropes of business development—from marketing to management—which is a lot for one person. I am very fortunate to have many role models (particularly strong women!) who do similar work. I also have a solid foundation of help from my family and friends who lend their own expertise when needed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Most simply put: I help managers and teams operate more efficiently and effectively. I believe that a lot of cookie-cutter training focuses on either technical skills OR leadership skills—yet, to me, you need to focus on both of these to make lasting and sustainable change. The work I do directly with managers intersects between coaching and consulting—sometimes I’m supporting you in trying something new, and sometimes I’m modeling or creating new things. I most enjoy when I get to work with managers and teams to create systems that are purposeful (no meeting just to have a meeting!) and sustainable (the system runs like clockwork). I believe in best practices, but also understand that context matters. What sets me apart is my emphasis on personalization for each of my clients—mass training might seem really shiny and fun, but unless people are actively and consistently aligning learning with their actual work, it can easily be lost.
Like many, I once believed that working 100 hours a week was the only way to get ahead. Now, I’m proud of the balance I’ve created through running my own business, which has made my life more fulfilling. I now spend more time on personal development, travel, and learning for fun. (PS. Come join me in San Francisco on a tour through Golden Gate Park where I volunteer as a tour guide with San Francisco City Guides!)
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Starting out can be both scary and thrilling! While there’s plenty of advice and opinions on what matters most, I recommend: talk to as many people as you can in your field—networking is invaluable. Listen to their stories to gain priceless wisdom, and experiment with different roles to discover what you love—you might be surprised! Avoid locking yourself into anything too soon; stay flexible and open to change. I spent a lot of time growing my skill, but less time growing my business—in retrospect, I would have tried to have a bit more balance between those two things. Have fun and let your passion shine through; it’s contagious and makes the journey enjoyable. Leverage your connections—family and friends want to help, so don’t be shy about asking. Enjoy the ride!
