Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanette Dela Cruz
Jeanette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey here was accidental, as most journeys tend to be. I’ve always been interested in astrology and tarot, and dabbled by going to get readings done for myself. In 2020, I had my first daughter. Of course, 2020 was not the ideal time to have a baby, and I ended up with postpartum depression and psychosis. I was in a career that drained me at the time, and the pressure of motherhood, combined with the my career and the general state of the world completely knocked me off my feet. I started going to see tarot readers and astrologers on a weekly basis, as I needed assurance that this too would pass. Eventually, a tarot reader told me to leave my career and start a new one, and that was the motivation I needed to do the dang thing. I left my teaching career and started a new path. Because I had more time and energy, I also was able to have time for hobbies! This led me to taking tarot classes to read for myself, and I fell in love. One night, I was up late and wanted to see if my readings would resonate with total strangers – so I got on a few Facebook mom group and asked if anyone wanted a free reading, To my surprise, I got hundreds of responses across the groups. I stayed up late for a few weeks getting all of these readings out, but also kept a spreadsheet where I would color code the responses to see how well they resonated. To my surprise, most resonated and found what I had to say helpful. From there, things just took off. People began to ask me for more in-depth readings and to do events. And here we are today, 3 years later and Wabi Sabi Tarot is still my little passion project.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
To be honest, it has been. I came into this with no expectations, which I think has been part of why it has been so smooth. I think if I had gone into this journey with expectations of a certain follower count, or a certain number of readings I wanted to do per month, I would have set myself up for disappointment. I think the only thing I struggle with every now and again is the game of comparison, but I try to remind myself we all start somewhere!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Wabi Sabi Tarot has really evolved. At first. I was just doing simple card readings over the internet. I didn’t have a lot of confidence, so I didn’t do in-person events for a while. Today, I do Zoom readings, in-person events and partner with brands and other businesses. My style of tarot reading melds together astrology and a dose of tough love to help get my clients where they need to go. I think what sets me apart is that I truly care about each client that I read for. I am in awe that I get to do this, and that people let me in to their world and I never take that for granted.
What were you like growing up?
Despite being a Leo Sun, I was very shy growing up. I grew up in Hawaii, but moved around quite a bit, so never truly felt at “home” as a kid. I had friends, but none that were very close until I got to high school. I think younger me just wanted to be accepted, so I went along with whatever everyone else was doing. As far as hobbies go, I was always fascinated by books, as well as astrology as a child. They were a welcome escape for me.
