Today we’d like to introduce you to Jami Dale
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story started in college. I decided to study abroad in Spain. It was my second time on a plane and my first time leaving the country. I’d always had secret dreams of being someone who traveled, explored, and lived a life true to what I wanted, but I don’t know if I ever really thought it was possible for me.
That semester abroad was when I caught the travel bug. It started me on a path I never would have expected!
After my Celiac diagnosis, I knew I had to get back to traveling. It took time, research, and some tears, but I finally feel confident traveling as a celiac.
Writing a travel blog was a dream of mine for years before I finally took the plunge. I was fortunate to be able to leave my job in public education and make a go of the travel blog right after the pandemic. Now, I love sharing travel tips and plans. But the thing I enjoy most is sharing gluten-free travel tips with other celiacs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As you’d expect, it hasn’t been a smooth road.
My Celiac diagnosis was the first big roadblock for me. Traveling was still intimidating when I got my diagnosis. Then, Celiac was intimidating and truly hard for me to adjust to. I remember wondering if I’d ever be able to travel like I wanted to. But, eventually, I dove into figuring it out.
Starting a travel blog was so much more complex than I’d ever anticipated. I expected the life
you see from so many Instagrammers: working from beautiful places and sipping coffee while writing helpful blog posts. But, honestly, it’s so much more than that. Whenever I think I’ve got it, I learn something new, and it’s back to updating. There were lots of tears at the beginning of the blog life, too. I’m really proud of how much I’ve learned along the way.
I still don’t know if I’ve mastered the life vs blog balance. But, that feels like a life-long journey.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of opening the travel world to others, especially those who have to eat gluten-free like me.
Travel has opened my mind and my world so much. It’s taught me more about myself and the world than anything else I’ve experienced, and I want to share that with others. It’s intimidating to think about where to go, what to do when you get there, and how to stay safe.
On another note, I love photography! My very first creative endeavor was to dive into photography. I’ve even photographed a few weddings (it wasn’t my thing). Travel photography is much more my style. I take all of the photos on my blog and I spend a ridiculous amount of effort on them. So, I hope you love them!
Celiac disease adds a layer to my travel experience. As a celiac, it’s so easy to feel like you can’t have the same experiences as others or that you will burden your travel companions with your dietary needs. I dream of showing others that the world is much more accessible than you might think.
Plus, seeing the amazing things the world has to offer and meeting new people is worth the effort.
How do you think about luck?
I’m so blessed with good luck. I’m fortunate to have a husband who supports my creative endeavors and believes in me more than anyone probably should. I’ve been lucky in my travels and the people I’ve met.
I was lucky to have been in a good financial situation. Because of that, I could take the leap and start the blog. One of my favorite things about blogging is that there is low overhead.
But, don’t believe life is a highlight reel. There have been deep struggles and things to overcome. No one has it easy all the time.
But, overall, I’m very aware that I’ve been blessed with special opportunities and intend to take advantage of them.
