Today we’d like to introduce you to Ikyo Bailey.
Hi Ikyo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started during the pandemic. I’ve always had an interest in cameras from a technological stand point but it wasn’t until my friends convinced me to make a photo page that i took it seriously. My first shoots were on my phone, learning composition and falling in love with capturing the moment. Enough to buy a camera and dive into this world of photography. I shot everyday for several months, reaching out to friends and people on Instagram offering free shoots.
One of my closest friends also became a photographer and we ended up working as interns for a photographer named G in newark nj.
He taught me lighting and took me on jobs with him to carry his light. The already large world of photography became massive with the addition of lighting.
Through this internship I still shot everyday both outside and in studio, invested more into my equipment and eventually found a magazine hub where i could send my pictures.
I wanted to grow this into a business so I ended up using the rest of my savings to open a studio and buy equipment. From that time with my studio all of my shoots became in studio shoots. Shooting everyday became twice a day and I quickly mastered lighting. Within 1 year of photography, i was a studio owner with 30 publications a client list and magazine covers, agency connections etc etc.
That progress continues to this day with gallery showing, international content and awards and commercial clientele. Now Rollin all of this up into a new business model on the non profit side.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggles have always been with people. The biggest problem for any visionary is to share their vision with other people in a way that they see it too or at least see enough of it to move forward.
That skill took time and several trials, and teams to get to a point where production can happen.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in fine arts portrait photography. I however show a wide variety of art styles on my portfolio with the intention to create synergetic imagery.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Our motion towards success is what writes it’s story. Take time to wonder and think of the next steps, but stay ready to move the moment the opportunity presents itself.
