Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Smith
Hi Hannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I was always drawn to the world of hair and beauty. However, being sandwiched between two brothers who excelled academically—one now a lawyer, the other a doctor—I felt pressure to pursue a “respectable” career. My path initially led me to junior college in Hutchinson, KS where I worked after classes at an after-school program, considering a career in teaching. I loved working with the kids, but the challenges of dealing with parents made me realize that teaching wasn’t my true calling.
After graduating, I found myself uncertain about what to do next. Despite feeling some doubt, I decided to follow my heart and enrolled in cosmetology school in Lawrence, KS. That first day was a revelation. We reviewed the syllabus in the morning, and when the instructor announced, “After lunch, we’ll start practicing shampooing each other,” I knew I was finally in the right industry. Getting hands-on experience from day one instead of sitting through another lecture lit a fire in me. From that moment on, I knew hair was not only my passion but my purpose.
Now, 15 years into my career, I see how rewarding and respectable this profession truly is—on par with being a lawyer or doctor. Like them, I help people feel their best and make a meaningful impact in their lives. The beauty industry requires expertise, skill, and a dedication to learning, and I’ve never looked back since that first day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey in the salon industry has truly been one of resilience and dedication. Starting out, it’s almost like being a “starving artist” – you’re pouring everything into your craft, but clients take time to build, and the rewards aren’t instant. Being a slower learner like I am, added another layer of challenge, especially when everyone around me seemed to pick things up quickly in school and continuing education. It becomes easy to feel discouraged when progress isn’t immediate, but persistence is key.
Moving 200 miles away, four years into my career was another big hurdle. I essentially started from scratch with clientele and had to prove myself all over again. It takes so much patience and hard work, but also creating genuine care for your clients to build those relationships and keep them coming back.
This journey has been full of obstacles, but dedication to the craft and the love I’ve put into my work and people have paved the way to where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hand-tied hair extensions and bring a fresh approach to both classic and modern hair color. But what truly sets me apart is the meaningful connection I create with each of my clients. I’m honored to work with entire families, across multiple generations, and many clients become part of my extended family. From the moment you step into my salon until the time you leave, I’m committed to giving you an unforgettable experience. And it doesn’t end there – I love staying connected between appointments, ensuring you always feel valued and cared for.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The salon industry is rapidly evolving, and it’s both an exciting and challenging time. As one of the nation’s top five fastest-growing industries, we’re seeing a significant shift. Many salon owners are feeling the strain, largely due to the high demands and rapid transformations within the market.
Moving forward, there will likely be a divide among stylists. Some will embrace an entrepreneurial mindset, proactively adapt to trends, and drive their business forward. These stylists will succeed by offering elevated, highly tailored experiences that meet clients’ shifting expectations. Others, however, may resist change and miss the opportunity to grow, which could have serious consequences for their business.
On the client side, there’s a shift towards luxury minimalism and a focus on meaningful consumption. Platforms like TikTok are popularizing trends like “under-consumption,” where living with less and making purposeful, fulfilling purchases are seen as desirable. Clients will become more discerning about both cost and the quality of service they receive, favoring salons that provide clear value.
To thrive, salons must be strategic, ensuring each purchase and service decision aligns with these emerging values. Building perceived value is essential; clients want to know that their investment in themselves and in our industry is worthwhile.
