Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Walberg
Hi Gabrielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always aspired to be a tattoo artist of some sort. I believe the first time I voiced this dream was when I was around 12 or 13 years old. Life took me on several twists and turns before I fully dedicated myself to this path, but each experience contributed to my growth as both an artist and a small business owner. After earning my art degree, I dove into the conventional working world, navigating the routine of a typical Monday-to-Friday, 9-to-5 job.
While many tattoo artists my age boast over a decade of experience, I remind myself that I began this journey a bit later in life. I was nearing 30 when I started my apprenticeship, which involved long, demanding days. I immersed myself in tattooing, driven by the need to prove myself—initially aiming to be “good enough,” which soon evolved into a commitment to be the best I could be.
After about a year, I was finally able to quit my day job and embrace tattooing full-time. Two years later, I opened my own private suite under the name The Crows Nest Tattoo, inspired by an incredible piece I received from Libby Tossey at Lucky Rabbit in Fargo, ND. This journey has been as rewarding as it has been challenging, and I look forward to what lies ahead.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, there were struggles. I anticipated them, though I couldn’t predict their exact nature. One of my favorite clients once told me that if I could learn anything, it should be adaptability. The world is in constant flux, and as long as I can adjust to those changes and refine what I need to succeed, I will find a way not just to survive but to thrive.
Throughout this journey, I’ve encountered various individuals—clients, fellow artists, shop owners—who may try to bring me down. I’ve learned that staying true to myself and prioritizing my art and my clients has been crucial. This commitment has shaped me into the artist I am today, allowing me to grow and flourish despite the challenges I face.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fine line and illustrative tattoo artist, and one of my favorite aspects of my job is creating unique, personalized designs for my clients. I love when someone examines my work closely, discovering fun little hidden gems and symbols woven into their tattoos. I thrive on the idea that the more you look, the more you see, and I love incorporating that depth into my art.
What sets me apart from many other artists in my area is the way I treat my clients. I prioritize making sure they feel comfortable and confident, not only in me but also in the design we create together. I often remind my clients that while it is my art, it’s still their body, and my goal is to collaborate with them to bring their vision to life. Unfortunately, I’ve heard many unfortunate stories about tattoo artists belittling clients’ ideas or disregarding their wishes to impose their own vision. I strive to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring that every client feels valued and heard.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Some of my fondest childhood memories are the visits to my grandparents in Colorado. I’ve always shared a special bond with them, particularly with my grandma, who has been my biggest supporter throughout my art career. She’s one of the few people who has truly believed in me and my decisions over the years.
I vividly recall the time I went off to college and my grandma stayed in my room at my parents’ house during a visit. While there, she discovered an old drawing I had rolled up in my closet and asked if she could keep it. This drawing was significant to me; I had entered it in my first art competition in high school, and I even placed with it. What matters more, however, is that she had it framed and hung in her entryway for as long as I can remember, even through multiple moves to different houses and cities.
Every time I visit her, I see that cherished piece proudly displayed on her wall, and it reignites my love for art. It serves as a beautiful reminder of our connection and the unwavering support she has given me throughout my journey.
