Today we’d like to introduce you to Fin Rose Aborizk
Hi Fin Rose , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I entered the publishing world in 2017. I self-published my first poetry collection, something I had wanted to do since I was a child. I found a way to get my work out there and through that whole process came a lot of learning and unlearning.
The most important part of following your dreams is to begin. It’s been a wild journey so far, but I’m really happy that I decided to begin.
The book and publishing industry is a tough one to get into, not only do you have to write the book, but then there’s so much more that comes after it. It really requires a lot of time, commitment, and dedication. It is definitely not easy, but once you take that first step, eventually things can become more clear. Asking for help, doing your research, goes such a long way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. When I released my first book I really didn’t have a proper idea of what I was doing when it came to the book being out.
I had no idea how to market myself properly, where to begin other than the occasional super inconsistent social media post. When I would reach out and inquire about events or anything in regards to publicity I would be faced with a lot of rejection which caused a lot of self doubt.
When I first started out, most of my time was caught between working and school, so even though I continued writing, I let the ‘talking about my writing’ fall to the back burner. All of that paired with severe imposter syndrome didn’t make a great starting point for me.
Yet, I kept writing and I kept putting out more books.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an independent author. I formed Dreams In Hiding in 2017, which started as a voice for my writing platform and over time it grew into a collective. I write and I read and I try to help other creatives as often as I can!
I specialize in poetry, and I am previously published under the name Tiffiny Rose Allen. I have also written multiple other forms and genres. I have 7 poetry collections, a short story collection, and an anthology of my own curation.
I can’t really pick what I am most proud of to be honest, but I will say I am proud of my own ambition, and I’m really glad I’ve continued the path that I started with my first book of poetry. Everything started with Leave the Dreaming to the Flowers.
I think what sets me apart from others is how I am able to allow myself to feel the anxiety and the fear and the doubts and not let it get in my way. Sometimes you just have to feel it through.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years? I would love to see even more readers and even more anthologies released, which volume II of the Dreams In Hiding anthology is currently underway!
Other than that, I am really just doing my best enjoying where I am in the present moment and letting everything flow however it needs to. I’m feeling it out. I’m really enjoying zine making right now as well as providing custom poems for people when I’m out and about doing markets and events within the community. It’s something I always look forward to and it’s another way to connect to readers.
Every endeavor I’ve undertaken always ends up creating a life of its own, so I’m just witnessing the culmination of each project and giving those projects the time and space to breathe.
