Today we’d like to introduce you to Etta Jomaria
Hi Etta, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Determination and perseverance are qualities that truly resonate with me, as my story would be incomplete without them. From acting in church dramas to college stage performances, I knew there was something in the acting horizon for me. So even while I was pursuing a degree in communications, it was obvious I would still need to find myself in school to sharpen my craft as an actor, hence the reason why I was so thrilled to be admitted to gain skills as an actor and a producer at the prestigious EbonyLife Creative Academy in Lagos, Nigeria. I have grown to be a fantastic performer, if I do say so myself, a really good producer and one who will be an export talent for Africa’s creative economy in the nearest future. And I am just getting started.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
“There are no roses without thorns” is a quote I often repeat, and I believe is the best way to respond to this question. Having to stay up all night recording monologues and self tapes for auditions that I sometimes don’t get a callback for, spending long hours waiting my turn to stand in front of judges and audition and watching the role go to someone else, being offered very poor fees just because I am not yet “popular” even when the roles are extremely challenging, the list is endless.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Nigerian actor, producer, speaker and humanitarian. I began my acting career appearing in the films Silenced (2017), 40 & Single (2018) and Gold Coast Lounge (2019). In 2022, I executive produced, produced and starred in the narrative short film Osawumikani that has screened in more than 12 international film festivals. I played supporting lead roles in the Africa Magic Originals Slum King (2023), Glass House and Showmax Original Cheta M (both 2024-present). I also appear in the sit-com My Flatmates (2024-present). My goal is to impact and shape cultures globally with my talent, and using the skills of excellent storytelling to bring issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) to poignant light. Notably, I was honored by the Women Economic Forum West Africa as an “Iconic Woman Creating a Better World For All”, and have received multiple best actress awards nominations.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see Nollywood penetrating the global market more, and producing more quality content to match our international counterparts. Talents like me will have more opportunities to collaborate on a global and bigger scale.
