Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Luongo
Hi Eric, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Art has always been more than just a pastime for me; it’s been my sanctuary, a refuge from life’s challenges. From a young age, I found solace in drawing, using it to focus amidst the chaos. Creating took me away from any problems I faced, and looking back, I can see how this passion laid the foundation for my artistic journey.
As I grew older, my fascination with art blossomed into a lifelong commitment. That sense of individuality fueled my desire to create and share my work with others. Instead of giving conventional store-bought gifts, I began to frame my artworks for friends and family. For me, art wasn’t just about creativity; it was a profound way to connect with those I cared about.
Every piece I create carries deep emotional significance. Art represents longevity, history, hard work, and honesty. When I give someone a piece of my work, I feel like I’m offering a piece of myself. This belief drives me to pour my heart and soul into each creation, making every artwork a true reflection of my dedication and passion.
Over the past two decades, I’ve immersed myself in the art community, participating in art clubs, craft fairs, and exhibitions. My focus has always been on recognition and community engagement rather than financial gain. I often remind myself, “What you do as a passion is more important than any amount of money.” My journey has been marked by perseverance, navigating the trials and tribulations every artist encounters.
My artistic evolution has led me to explore various subjects, from landscapes to animal portraits. Four years ago, I took a bold leap into creating very large, to small, outdoor artwork pieces. I see these pieces as symbols of hard work and strength, capable of withstanding any storm. While I prefer to create originals, I also enjoy reinterpreting post-impressionist pieces, infusing them with my unique perspective.
These outdoor pieces have struck a chord with many, serving as both decorative elements for homes and gardens and symbols of community connection. I genuinely believe that art fosters relationships among people from diverse backgrounds. I often say, art brings people together. It allows for discussions about beauty and perspective, free from negativity and conflict.
I’m deeply passionate about the role of art in building stronger communities. Engaging in creative pursuits, helps bridge-divides and fosters positivity. “Art allows people to be who they are, and what they believe in. It doesn’t concern itself with politics or hatred; it simply exists as a medium for connection. As I continue my artistic journey, I remain committed to inspiring others. If more people embraced their creativity, the world would be a better place. My story serves as a reminder of the transformative power of art—not just as a personal expression, but as a communal force that unites and uplifts.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yet, the journey of an artist is anything but smooth. If you’re a true artist, you know it’s never easy,. The path to creativity often comes with challenges, both financial and emotional. One of the biggest obstacles I face has been the cost of art supplies. Being a successful artist requires investing in materials. To support my family—my wife and two children—I work a full-time job while pursuing my artistic dreams on the side. I admit, fitting art into my daily routine has been tough, juggling work, family life, and my creative pursuits.
Alongside financial hurdles, I often encounter skepticism from others. People will tell you, you can’t do this’ or ‘It’s not worth it. Yet, I believe persistence is key. Life will always try to knock you down, but you have to stand up and keep moving forward. Each setback, whether it’s a harsh critique or a personal struggle, only strengthens my resolve to create.
My passion fuels my creativity and resilience. You have to love what you do, emphasizing the importance of inner strength and dedication. Despite the difficulties, I pushed through, determined to share my art with the world. I do things my way and don’t let anyone else dictate my path.
As a devoted husband and father, I’m mindful of how my artistic journey impacts my family. I want my children to see that passion and creativity matter. I’m actively involved in local events, believing that a strong creative presence can uplift the community. Despite the struggles, I see value in every challenge. Difficulties make you stronger and show people your worth. The road to artistic fulfillment may not be easy, but it’s a journey worth taking.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For the past four years, I’ve been making waves in the art world with my outdoor installations, specializing in small to large treated pine wood canvases, measurements vary. I create vibrant pieces that find homes in front of houses, gardens, pools, and businesses. My process is both meticulous and innovative. I carefully installed each piece using sturdy posts buried about 2 feet into the ground. Each artwork is protected with multiple coats of polyurethane, ensuring they can withstand the elements. I even include a free solar-powered spotlight for nighttime viewing. With around 35 pieces scattered across various towns, my work has become a familiar sight in the community.
My artwork blends various styles, including original pieces and re-creations inspired by post-impressionist painters. I use a range of mediums—oil, acrylic, ink, and marker—spending one to two months on each piece, priced between $650 and $850. I feel like everything I’ve done in the past led me to this moment.
One of my proudest achievements is a recent community piece measuring 10 feet high and 8 feet wide. This interactive mural, located in front of the local community center, features colorful, textured wings that invite people to stand in front and pose for photos. It represents celebration and togetherness, highlighting its role in fostering community spirit.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I engage directly with my clients to create meaningful art. My work is about building relationships. Each piece is not just a work of art but a connection with the people who commission it.
In today’s digital age, I believe there’s a vital need for human interaction. We need more connections, more time spent in nature, and more creativity. My art serves as a reminder of the beauty of real-life interactions, inviting people to step away from screens and appreciate the world around them.
As I continue to create and inspire, my journey exemplifies the power of art to unite communities and foster connections. With each piece, I not only beautify spaces but also nurture relationships, reminding us of all of the importance of creativity and human connection in our lives.
Born in the 70s and growing up in the 80s, I’m a proud member of Generation X, often known as the last “latchkey kids.” My childhood was filled with independence—no phones or computers to distract me. After school, I’d come home, do my homework, and then head outside to play, ride my bike, climb trees, build forts and go camping. Those imaginative experiences shaped who I am today.
Art has always been a passion of mine. I took countless art classes, and during high school, I was accepted into a co-ed summer program at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. Being surrounded by talented artists sparked my creativity. However, I often faced pressure from relatives to pursue a stable 9-to-5 job, which made me resistant to following a traditional path.
Throughout my teenage years, I actively participated in art clubs and social events, but there were times I lost focus on my artistic ambitions. It wasn’t until I got married and had children that I reignited my passion for art about 20 years ago. I realized how much I missed the simplicity of life—the colors of nature and meaningful conversations with people.
Now, I’m all about fostering genuine connections. I believe we need more face-to-face interactions and philosophical discussions, rather than being glued to screens. I want to encourage others to explore their creativity, appreciate the small things, and focus on community and love over material wealth.
My artistic interests are varied, ranging from charcoal and colored pencils to acrylic and oil mediums. I enjoy spending time with my family, exploring independent music, and enjoying Broadway plays in New York City. Ultimately, my focus is on happiness, connection, and embracing the beauty of life, reminding myself and others that true fulfillment comes from within.
