Today we’d like to introduce you to Emersyn Park
Hi Emersyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In March 2020, the entire world felt the effects of COVID19. Looking back at those months of uncertainty, I feel blessed that I was able to press pause on my life and take stock of things that are really important – most importantly, my family. The four of us ate every meal together, played lots of board games, watched old movies, and enjoyed a lot of quality time.
After I created a bucket list of things I wanted to do when quarantine ended, I tackled the one item that I could work on from my home – writing a book. I’ve always wanted to write a novel. I have many short stories, poems, and the beginnings of a novel, but our quarantine allowed me the time to focus.
My debut novel, He Loves Me, She Loves Me Not, was born during our health-house-arrest and took over a year to complete. I published it in August 2021. Every year since, I’ve written and published a book: Puppet’s Shadow in 2022, Secrets Maple Keeps in 2023, and Roots of His Evil in 2024. I’m currently working on a sequel to Roots of His Evil.
I’m so thankful for that time to focus on what I truly wanted out of life. I feel blessed to be living my dream.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve never driven down a perfectly smooth road that didn’t have some bumps, detours, or bits of gravel. Even though I didn’t expect my career as an author to be any different, I was surprised at how much there was to learn.
Initially, I simply thought I’d write a book, people would read it, they would tell their friends, and I’d earn millions of dollars. Okay, I never thought I’d earn millions, but I never realized how hard it was to get your work into the hands of readers. I knew nothing of the publishing industry or marketing and didn’t care to understand what an algorithm was. But I know now!
The part of this whole process that I enjoy most is creating the plot and its many twists and then when it’s complete, talking about it with readers. Creating an imaginary world that evokes an emotional response from my readers is the best gift a writer can earn.
The hardest part of the whole process is marketing. The act of publishing a book is black and white – do this, do that. But marketing is fickle. One week a Facebook Ad could bring you tons of traffic and then next week none. Furthermore, technology and options improve weekly, and it’s hard to keep up with the latest trends.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
All of my fictional books are set in the Midwest. “Write what you know.” My books are loosely based on local happenings around me. From a scandal at my home church to my son’s drug addiction, I created fiction that contain my true reactions to events. Each book is relationship-based and dives deep into the feelings of the characters involved.
I often get asked which book is my favorite. Each book holds different feelings for me because while writing each one I learned so much. However, if I had to pick one book, I would say my debut novel, He Loves Me, She Loves Me Not, is the novel I’m most proud of because I had no goal in mind and I let my heart lead me. I wrote how I wanted the story to go. I wrote what I like to read.
When writing my second novel, Puppet’s Shadow, reviews – good and bad – echoed in my thoughts, pushing the story this way and that. I did research, I read articles on how to make your book a success, and financially, I upped the stakes. Again, it was a learning process. With each novel, I create different personal goals like telling the story from different points of view and using flashbacks to enhance the story, and now I’m working on a sequel.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
The best way to support a small business is through referrals. The New York Times can publish a list of the top ten best books, and I will scan the list and maybe jot down a title or two. But if my best friend, co-worker, or cousin tells me that I must read a book, I purchase a copy right away. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising.
For an author, reviews wherever the book is sold also mean more than anything. An honest, positive review proves value to the work. Small businesses thrive on referrals and reviews. Taking a chance on a less-known diamond makes the discovery even more rewarding.
My books are available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and through Ingram Sparks, and placing a review on these websites helps my novels get recognition. I’ve met some wonderful and loyal readers through review sights like Good Reads and AllAuthors.
