Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Brophy
Hi Eddie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got started, honestly? I’ve always been a misfit. I never fit in anywhere. The happiest I’ve ever been, is usually when I’m writing and even then, there’s the burden of…will this ever see the light of day? Will it get published? And if it is? Will anyone care? I kind of have this double life where I’m a daddy, but I’m also this painfully single dude who still wants to be Prince, Kurt Cobain, or someone who is worth paying attention to but also has this enormous hole in their soul where they love being with their children but also pick their children up from school and feel like…oh yeah, I’m not welcome here, I don’t fit in, these people are probably judging me. When I write? I feel safe. I feel accepted. It’s one of the few habitues so to speak where…. alright, who I am is literally what keeps the train on the tracks.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. When I published my first novel? I think my now ex-wife HATED me. I wasn’t a success. The book came out and it changed nothing at all. I was still a stay-at-home dad; she wasn’t really into me anymore…and then divorce was inevitable. I didn’t write because I thought it would make me rich or famous, I wrote because sometimes that was the only answer to what life kept throwing at me. I mean, it’s still kind of like this silly pipe dream, keep writing and you’ll get there, man. Sometimes I feel like I’m out at sea without a damn compass. Then I’ll talk to people who read my stuff and it feels like having a conversation with the best friend I haven’t seen in decades, and we picked up right where we left off. That is why I still write. I love having those can’t predict moments where someone finds you or your words and you talk like you know each other so well and you just met.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a writer. It feels silly to say that out loud because I don’t make a steady income or incredible income from it…I just really love writing and I get such a great feeling in my heart and soul when what I wrote resonates.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What do I like? I love meeting talented and honest people who love what they do. What do I dislike? People who are motivated by fame or money. You’re in it for ALL the wrong reasons. Starving artist isn’t just something your parents said to scare you from pursuing your passion, it’s such a painful and real part of the process.
