Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tamika Johnson
Hi Dr. Tamika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
At 46 years old, I’ve reached a crossroads in my life. I find myself at a juncture where I’m contemplating my next steps. For over two decades, I’ve dedicated my career to education and have also ventured into entrepreneurship, experiencing both highs and lows. However, I feel an urge to pursue more. Despite being married for 18 years, raising a 26-year-old son, a 15-year-old daughter, and a 2-year-old granddaughter, I yearn for a deeper sense of fulfillment.
For the majority of my existence, I’ve embraced the role of a servant leader, following God’s guidance. Yet, in recent times, I’ve felt a growing dissatisfaction. I’ve considered various paths, but the prospect of taking risks seems daunting. Yet, I’m ready to embrace these challenges.
I’ve reached a stage in my life where I’ve guided and supported many others, and now it’s time to shift my focus inward. I aim to leave a lasting impact through acts of love and service to others, while also fulfilling my personal calling. I plan to make this year my final year as a classroom teacher, a role I’ve filled with passion and dedication.
As I’ve journeyed through life, I’ve faced numerous obstacles in my health, career, and personal life, yet I’ve managed to overcome them. My career spans over 23 years as a teacher, 15 years as a teacher coach, and now as a life coach. I’ve authored eight books and collaborated on three others with fellow authors, including my husband and daughter, who are also writers.
At 46, I’m ready for a new chapter. I’m eager to explore a new career path, and I’m prepared to take the necessary risks.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path has been anything but easy. I’ve faced health problems, financial distress, mental distress and judicial injustice within my immediate family that have caused delays and doubts, but I’ve managed to push through every obstacle, including the current ones. I’ve encountered numerous obstacles that made me questioned my purpose in life and my very existence. Like many others, I’ve had moments of doubt. There were times when I considered abandoning my dreams and just going with the flow. However, my determination and perseverance have kept me going against all odds. I’ve become resilient. I’ve come to understand that there will be moments when I feel like quitting, so I’ve learned to take reasonable breaks when needed and not lose hope. My purpose and goals are greater than myself, so I aim to fulfill the role that God has given me. My life’s purpose is to serve others while also becoming the best version of myself. Through the trials of life, I’ve gained wisdom from my failures and errors.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I serve as an English Language Arts instructor, life coach, religious leader, author, empowerment speaker, and advocate for both education and mental well-being. My days are dedicated to fighting for fair educational opportunities for children who are often overlooked or neglected, as well as raising awareness about the importance of mental health. I’m the owner of Grow Up Empowerment Life Coaching LLC, where I work closely with my clients to set goals, track progress, and introduce fresh viewpoints. I encourage my clients, keeping a close eye on their emotional well-being and overall advancement, and hold them responsible for not taking action or failing to achieve set goals. I focus on improving communication skills, including public speaking and active listening, and provide coaching strategies for managing mental health to reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, I help clients with financial matters, such as budgeting and dealing with debt. I organize community events through my women’s organization, Women Leaving the Clubs and Returning Home, where we focus on mental, spiritual, and emotional health as well as community involvement. I organize community events surrounding education. I also speak at empowerment events hosted by others. My mission is to inspire and empower others to reach their full potential.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I embrace taking risks. Have there been moments when I’ve hesitated to do so? Absolutely, there have been instances where I’ve been reluctant to take risks. However, without taking risks, I wouldn’t have achieved the goals I’ve set. I’ve learned to face challenges head-on, trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Despite facing mental stress and physical health issues, I managed to earn my doctoral degree. Even when confronted by intimidating professors, I persevered and successfully completed my doctoral studies. As a teenager, I was warned that college would be too overwhelming for me because of an autoimmune disease I was diagnosed with at 15 years old. Despite this, I not only attended college but also earned Associate, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. I firmly believe that taking risks is an essential part of life. Embracing risks is crucial for achieving goals and advancing in life. While fear may sometimes hold me back, ultimately, I recognize the importance of taking necessary risks. I take leaps of faith and do it!
