Today we’d like to introduce you to Doc Strange
Hi Doc, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started with a genuine desire to be unique and independent. In the early 2000’s there was a big movement in the South and West Coast for indie rap music. I felt like making your own beats, rhymes, image and approach was the only way. Living in Texas, it wasn’t like I could just go up Def Jam or So So Def and wait in the lobby with a demo. So, the “out the trunk” wave worked for me. That was my start.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles are usually all in your head. I have feelings of being an outsider. I mean that as far as an outsider in the music industry. Yet, I have a foot firmly planted in certain aspects of it. Because of where I’m from, I always feel like I have to exert great effort just to get basic creative things done. This is just a problem of perspective. When I use that outsider mentality positively and realize that it is a strength, I make more moves. Being unique has to be protected and projected.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an independent Hip Hop artist in the modern method. That means I physically manage my own endeavors 100%. I come up with the marketing, secure and create artwork, write, produce, and shoot video. Sister With Pistol Songworks is my publishing company specializing in authentic Hip Hop product. I have been featured in XXL Magazine, several blogs, and won a Fort Worth Weekly Award for Best New Artist Hip Hop/R&B. I have had the pleasure of working with artists such as Kool Keith, Sadat X and Guilty Simpson.
I am set apart because being in Texas, there are very few rappers that take a creative approach like me. I have made concept albums, trip hop records, 80’s style synth pop, and beat tapes. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. I definitely give the advanced listener an interesting journey.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I am deep in the culinary world. I have lead brands as an Executive Chef, AGM, Bar Manager and corporate trainer. I am just as passionate about food as I am about music.
