Today we’d like to introduce you to Denzel Smalls
Denzel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
“I started in the design industry as a graphic designer. I grew up with a passion for the arts, entertainment, and animation fields. The concept of bringing a song or idea to life through visual effects truly enticed me. When most people think of arts and media, the first things that come to mind are paintings, drawings, sculptures—things in that space. While there’s nothing wrong with the traditional sense of art, the career field is much broader than that. It encompasses everything from car designs to cartoon shows, and I wanted to be a part of it all.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
“Absolutely not, lol. It’s somewhat funny to think about because, in hindsight, most of it would have gone a lot smoother if I had known the lessons I learned afterward. However, hindsight is always 20/20. The biggest drawback was believing that people had my best interests in mind, when, in reality, they were looking out for themselves. Even worse, when I established boundaries or did what was best for myself, they would do things to hinder or deter my success, even when the decisions I made did not directly or indirectly affect their lives. I just wasn’t allowing myself to be used anymore. The injuries I sustained in the United States Air Force were a challenge as well. It happened roughly six years ago. The injuries forced me to make a career change and ultimately led me to pioneer a unique path for myself that stands apart from any other.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist, basically what I do is business growth and development, basically making sure everything runs smoothly as well as implementing practices for positive and healthy work environments for all. As I’ve previously stated I began in graphic design basically the entertainment industry. What people don’t know is how close related and intertwined the entertainment industry is to psychology. I’m most proud of my ability to adapt and change through all the adversity I’ve been challenged with in life it really defines apart of who I am
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I think success is a subjective of an idea as what “good” is. Success for some his the “American Dream” nice house fence a yard a friendly dog/ kids that everyone loves. Living in a strong positive community. For others it’s a yacht off the coast of Bermuda, lavish parties, designer clothes.
Success for me is seeing those around me genuinely happy. Excited for the what’s happening in the present and what’s on the horizon
