Today we’d like to introduce you to Datboykcold Aka Dbk
Hi Datboykcold, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Let’s take this to the beginning, I was born August 1st 1997 , born and raised in Indiana Indianapolis .Also known as Naptown . Growing up it was ruff , my dad was in and out of jail a lot but I still went to go see him here and there . I grew up in sorta of a single parent household, my mom had a husband at first , life was good untill it wasn’t. I wrote my first song after me getting in trouble one day , it was weird because I didn’t even know what I was doing . I always tell myself I was writing a poem . So you know what I did . I joined poetry club in middle , I was only there for like 2 weeks because we ended up doing an activity , and I remember the teacher explained all the ways that you can express poetry and that was through music. Till that day I considered all my poems, raps . And it just went from there , all That was 7th grade. By 8th grade I was hanging around other students that always did music, they had a group called “New Gen” . I was always nervous to show my music so I would stay in the back and hype them up . I was very anti social in middle school so it took a lot from me to even show my close friends about my music. This would go on for years. I would say all the way till the end of 12th grade . I remember I dropped a song on SoundCloud and I let a few people hear it in my class and they were liking it . All the feedback gave me them chills , I kinda felt like somebody could hear what I was saying for the first time in my life . After graduation , I went and dropped a song called “Sprite Gang” . I had people rapping my ad lids and all . It was a dope feeling to witness. That energy also brought along songs like “Get Silly ” which always did some noise and let’s not forget “Gnarly” . Gnarly was the song that gave me my crown in the city . I had the attention I was waiting for . I ended up starting up a twerk competition in my hometown off Gnarly . Something for the books . In 2017 a year after high school I went to a recording music school in Ohio for 2 months to learn how to mix . At that time the world was in between you can learn everything on YouTube and you need to take to butt to school. So I went to school and I can’t lie , it was an experience I won’t forget. I met some dope artists across the world , I got to work with some celebrity producers and also worked in some pretty dope studios . I’m talking from the 80s equipment untill all electronic equipment. It was fun and something I would live over again . After I came back I got right to it with my music . I dropped my first album called “Life Before Notice ” . I had all my first singles plus more music like ” Sprite Gang and Just Broke. These two songs would be what made the most attention on my album and gave me the confidence to keep going because of all the feedback I was getting . I later began to drop more mixtapes like “420 24/7″ and Don’t talk when I Talk” , from both them 2 projects you can see my growth and that’s the importance to it . Currently I’m focusing on singles and hopefully a another project for 2025 . My story does end here matter it just gets better.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not , not at all . We all go through trials and tribulations at multiple times throughout our life. But being an artist I went through alot of people doubting me. This is from the very first time of me starting to rap , all the way till today . I’m still getting comments and comments back to back telling me to stop , or your trash , you need to just give it up . Hold time that’s just making me go way harder because I take that negativity energy and I turn it into something positive and just keep dropping music. One day they gonna feel me .
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Apart of me being a rapper I also self taught myself to produce music, I been working with Lo’s and highs since I was 13 so I always knew how to work around sound,I can make beats but only if I had the right equation , i also know how to make cover art , I’m also a host and a DJ. I like to keep all my skills based around music and entertainment.. I believe me being self taught from 13 years old makes me stand out a lot because I put so much love in and out of my work .
