Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Wessels.
Hi Claire, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been designing clothes since I could hold a crayon—at least, that’s what my parents like to say. While I’m not sure how much you should believe them, creativity has always run in my blood. My father, an architect, fostered a home environment where artistry and innovation thrived. Though I hail from Des Moines, Iowa—a city not typically associated with artistic endeavors—it’s a place brimming with creative energy and inspiring people.
Originally, I planned to study chemical engineering to develop perfumes and makeup, but after realizing just how much math was involved, I pivoted to a path better suited to my strengths and passions. I earned my BS in Apparel, Merchandising, and Design from Iowa State University, an intense and technically focused program influenced by the university’s reputation for engineering and architecture. This rigorous education gave me a deep understanding of textiles, specialized software, and product manufacturing. I owe much of my skill and expertise to the guidance of three incredible professors who profoundly shaped my journey.
Fueled by a desire to teach and inspire future designers, I pursued my MS at Drexel University. This program provided a more creative perspective and, most importantly, helped me forge invaluable industry connections. Though I never planned to start my own business, the momentum I gained from my graduate collection show set me on this unexpected path. Sometimes, the universe nudges you in a direction you never anticipated, and I’ve learned to embrace the opportunities that come my way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a mostly smooth road. I am very lucky to have the support system that I have. My family is wonderful and has my back completely and has truly been the inspiration that has gotten me to where I am today. School always has its struggles but it is necessary to gain the knowledge you need to be successful. My biggest struggles have always been individuals who are angered by others success. Money is always a struggle but it comes and goes and you just have to ride the tides.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think the first thing that set’s me apart is my level of education and the quality of the universities I attended. I have also worked directly in the luxury fashion industry for most of my time in school and for a bit after. I have also had wonderful mentors along the way that have only added to my knowledge. I specialize in tailoring and couture as well as textiles and textile techniques. I create every garment I make from conception to final product, there is no outsourcing or other hands in the pot, it’s only me. I also try to produce everything in the most sustainable way I can. I use all natural fibers and deadstock materials. I also prefer to use hand techniques if I can, garments lay nicer and are more high quality when sewn by hand rather than by machine. Above all I am an academic and am constantly trying to improve my education, I do not feel whole if I am stagnant in my education.
What matters most to you?
Always my people. I would have gotten nowhere without them. Friends and family both.
