Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciph Boogie
Hi Ciph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my journey in the vibrant streets of Brooklyn, NY. I split my time between my mother’s and my grandmother’s households, being raised both at my mother’s house on Gates Avenue and at my grandmother’s house in the Marcy Projects in Bedford-Stuyvesant when my mom was at work. My grandmother lived in the same building as Tyran “TY-Ty” Smith, Jay-Z’s best friend. My grandmother lived on the second floor, while TY-Ty’s family lived on the first floor. Being in such close proximity to the birth of the Roc-A-Fella empire had a profound impact on me.
When I was 11, my mother, little sister, and I moved to Canarsie, where I currently reside. Despite the change in location, my love for hip-hop and music in general remained steadfast. I started writing short stories and poems as a kid, which eventually evolved into songwriting. Studying song formats and understanding popular songs by listening to the radio helped me hone my craft. I knew I had the talent for a music career. Building relationships and releasing quality music have been the cornerstones of my journey.
Throughout my career, I’ve strived to create music that resonates with the human experience, balancing both the positive and negative aspects of life. I don’t want to be boxed in as just a “positive” rapper; my music is about realism and authenticity.
One of my early breaks came in 2012 when my track “Solemnly” was featured by ESPN for their Boxing Program Friday Night Fights. That same year, Red Bull used my track “Rush” for their “Red Bull Racing’s American Vacation” promotional video, which has since garnered over a million views. In 2015, the NBA used my track “Let’s Work” for the Boston Celtics teamwork segment on NBA TV.
My career took an interesting turn when I did digital marketing for the legendary Reggie Osse, also known as Combat Jack, on his groundbreaking podcast The Combat Jack Show. In 2018, I returned to the booth, collaborating with international hip-hop artist Dark Dust on the track “Party” for his album MK Ultra. That same summer, I did the spoken word intro for the entrepreneur podcast Faith, Grind, Inspire, hosted by Dr. Jean Alerte.
Looking ahead, my ultimate goal is to secure a prominent position within the music industry and leverage that success into other areas like TV, film, and technology. My journey has been about more than just music; it’s been about creating something timeless and impactful.
I’m excited to release the follow-up to my EP, “Sometime in New York City Vol,” and continue building on my accolades. The support of my family, especially the influence of my mother and my grandmother, along with my roots in Bed-Stuy and Canarsie, have been instrumental in shaping who I am as an artist. My music is a testament to my experiences and my unwavering commitment to the art of hip-hop and music as a whole.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I remember being in a rap cipher and getting booed as I was rapping. That was devastating, especially since it happened in the early stages of my career. Another struggle was that many people in my neighborhood in Canarsie didn’t think I was a good artist at all. I was even called “corny” to my face. That was rough, as it also happened in the beginning of my career. When things like that happen, you begin to second guess yourself and doubt your skills. It makes you wonder if anyone likes what you’re doing. So, that was a major struggle along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a rap artist, songwriter, and poet. I’m known for creating music that reflects the human experience, with a motivational twist. My energetic yet passionate performances are a big part of who I am as an artist. What sets me apart from others is my drive to succeed. I have this saying I’ve been repeating to myself lately, “I want more from this life than what I’m getting.” This mindset pushes me to work a thousand times harder.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m a bit of a presidential nerd, especially when it comes to modern-day presidents like JFK, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon. I’ve familiarized myself with their presidencies and the different eras they were in. I’ve always had a knack for history and historical facts. It’s a side of me that most people wouldn’t expect, given my music and public persona, but it’s something I’m really passionate about.
