Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Winship.
Hi Christine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been creating all my life. Doodling in grade school, graduating from art school. But it started when I did a painting for a friend of mine for his 30th birthday. I was a portrait of Bill but without Bill. Instead, a painting of all the things he loved. His guitar, a Rangers hockey puck, and his beloved pug, Pugs. He was so moved when he saw it. He loved that dog so much :)
About a week later, his mother contacted me requesting a portrait of her dog. Then her friends called me up – they all wanted their dogs done. And so, the Pedigree Artist got a website.
Since then, my portfolio has grown. I will still gladly accept commissions and I still paint my cats. But now, I want to capture moments that I see in nature, whether it’s a bird on a branch or a cloud on the horizon.. that moment that may not happen again. I’m trying to capture that magic.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road, but every challenge is an opportunity to learn. Whether it’s mastering the perfect painting, dealing with a difficult client, or down pouring rain at an outdoor art show. There will always be lessons to learn and I’m still learning.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter. 90% of the time, I work in watercolors. I have also enjoyed painting in oils and acrylics. I also am a legit artist for hire.
I’m most proud of my diversity of work. I love a challenge. I recently did a 20 ft wall mural for a geotech firm in Massachusetts.
I’ve painted a 5ft ceramic turkey for a turkey celebration and have illustrated 2 children’s books. I’m full of ideas!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I thank the heavens every day for the internet. It made my “risk-taking” so much easier. Entering online art competitions and events was better than getting a gallery on the phone. Although maybe if I were to call, I don’t know, maybe I’d be a bigger name.
But you need to engage with people. The risk is that they may not say anything back or if they do, it won’t be in your favor. If you don’t take it personally, you move to the next.
