Today we’d like to introduce you to Carter Camille
Hi Carter, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’d say my future of having my hands covered in mud started as a child by spending my days digging in the dirt of the garden with my dad. By making mud pies and witches brew in the backyard with my sister. By burying myself in the sand at the beach. The connection I have felt to the earth ever since I was a child is something I’ve never been able to put into words. Which is why ceramics and it’s teachings have been a voice I didn’t know I needed.
Bare Minimum Ceramics was born out of a strong desire to feel seen and heard in this world. As an individual who battles the affects of mental illness, finding a creative outlet was the only thing that would keep my mind and anxieties at bay. So I turned to the thing that brought me a lot of joy in high school; pottery.
I never expected or intended to turn my creative outlet into my career but life is funny and throws you curve balls you never saw coming.
The universe put this little whisper into my ear saying “give it a try!” “claim that artist in you!”
Bare Minimum Ceramics started out as just that. The Bare Minimum.
And now it has evolved into this beautiful business of mine.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. Nothing about this has come effortlessly or easy
I have zero business background. I did not go to school for ceramics. In fact, I only completed a semester of college.
The struggles vary from mad imposter syndrome to bookkeeping and taxes. But along the way I’ve learned that even though I always choose the hardest and most complicated route, that I am capable and strong enough to do anything I set my mind to. And learning to ask for help has been the biggest eye opener.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m Carter Camille. I am cloud gazer, a flower smeller, and a sunset chaser. I am an artist, a friend, a daughter, a partner. I am a deep feeler and I spend a lot of time in my own head; my own world. Connection is at the core of my beliefs and a good reason why I do what I do.
I like to preface who I am outside of my business first because for so long that was my only identity.
I own and operate Bare Minimum Ceramics with my dog. Milly, and cat, Nova, by my side. I make functional ceramic wares that are intended for everyday use and to be loved on for years to come. I like that my craft brings the ability to constantly change and push myself and to create newness all the time.
My style is constantly changing and evolving with the changing seasons of life
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m not known for having great luck but if it’s taught me anything (whether good or bad) it’s that life keeps happening and things always work out.
