Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Evans
Hi Caroline, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey is being accepted into Rutgers College as an undeclared major. I was determined to be at the school for only four years. I came across a poster for a tattoo convention and decided to go with my sister and my boyfriend at the time. My sister diligently went through all the portfolios and chose Mike Siderio to her tattoo for her. While waiting to be tattooed, his young son asked me to draw on him. That put me on the path to tattooing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, obstacles would be toxic shop environments and medical issues. I have Ehlers-Danos Syndrome, signs of Marfan’s, and hypoglycemia so I have to manage these conditions daily to be able to tattoo. With toxic shops, going from shop to shop trying to find a nurturing environment that we had at my first shop in Elizabeth, NJ. I opened my shop in 2015 and I continue to have that calm environment.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a tattoo artist working in many different styles of tattooing, including awards won for cover-up work. I don’t pigeonhole myself to a particular style because I almost lost my ability to tattoo in 2010 so being able to tattoo whatever comes through my door is amazing. People are drawn to specific imagery for a reason and it’s not my place to insert my ego into their relationship with their iconography.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
We have a lot of regulatory bodies that are taking notice of the industry, like FDA, border patrol, and the like so the shift that I’m seeing is that artists are going to have to be much more licensed and professional, doing things through the legitimate channels. Corporations are starting to become interested in the industry as well but everyone I knew that got involved in tattooing was to get away from corporations so I don’t know how that will play out.
