Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooklynn Graham.
Hi Brooklynn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My focus and medium vary from time to time, but art and making have always been at the core of who I am. I got my business start in online plant groups in my local community. There, I was not only able to trade my work for new plants and supplies, I was able to work with plant shops and connect with others in the area.
Now, I manage an online shop and work with several consignment stores, as well as participate in local events and markets. This allows me to keep consistent branding and inventory in stores and online, while still being able to follow creative impulses for my more varied event selection. It also provides the opportunity to collaborate with other artists and small business, which has been instrumental in getting me where I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Unfortunately, it has been anything but a smooth road. Facing the waning energy and motivation that come with chronic pain and ADHD, there are many times where my creativity has faltered. In both personal and career endeavors, it can be hard at times to maintain the momentum to get through to the next milestone, or even just through the less busy seasons, and sometimes getting moving again feels a lot like starting over. Through it all though, my desire to create has never wavered, and that’s been enough to pull me through. Struggles are common to anyone’s journey, and it’s important to know what’s worth it for you, and what it is that can keep you moving forward. Find that, and even uncertainty and exhaustion will have a hard time stopping you.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, my focus is on functional artwork, and I am most known for my geode-inspired propagation stations and the handmade jars I make for candles. I enjoy the challenge of taking something functional or ordinary and customizing it to someone’s style. Most of my work draws inspiration from nature, and I love adding those handmade details that make each item unique.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resourcefulness or tenacity without a doubt! I love a puzzle, and find joy in figuring things out. A lot of what I do is self-taught, whether out of necessity or simply a desire to learn, and that’s been immensely helpful in fueling my creative career. Projects and skills build on each other over time, and each new material or process learned opens up a new way to use the tools and supplies already available. It also means getting stuck in the process isn’t the end, there’s almost always another way to do something if you have the patience and enough interest to figure it out. And if not, then there’s a way to use those skills or materials for something different in the future.
