Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Johnson
Hi Beverly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
If I had to describe my journey over the last few years, I would use the word- unpredictable.
I never imagined that I’d be a domestic violence survivor.
I never imagined I’d have to start over from scratch in my 40s.
I never imagined that this journey would propel me to my purpose—the catalyst for becoming my whole, beautiful, quirky, authentic self.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While recovering from a divorce or the end of a relationship, no one tells you the grief that you’ll experience. There are so many emotions to deal with and you won’t always get it right. I had to discover who Beverly would become. The best lessons come from our struggles. Without those seasons, we never develop our resiliency. One of my main challenges was unlearning my habits and embracing the new ones. I’d describe a journey like this- you’re locked in a dark room, trying to navigate through it. You see the glimmer of light peaking under the door. You know it’s possible to make it, but you don’t see what’s ahead of you. The healing journey will look different for all of us. The top priority is not to give up on yourself.
I’d made up my mind that I would make it to the other side. I didn’t have a timeframe or a blueprint. I knew that I would make it. I had to. The next version of me was relying on me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear two hats. I’m a Certified Health Coach, Personal Trainer, Nutrition and Transformation Coach, I coach women (and some men) on how to make lasting weight loss changes by changing their love affair with food and adopting a sustainable and healthy diet & exercise lifestyle. I approach health & wellness from an “inside-out” perspective, focusing on resetting your mindset as the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle through The EPIC Academy.
In addition to being an entrepreneur, I have a fantastic career at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration—yes, NASA—the space people! In my official capacity, I serve as the center investment manager, managing a multi-million dollar portfolio.
It’s an exciting movement as we prepare for the Artemis launch. Manager by day and health coach by night. On the outside, you’d think that both worlds wouldn’t mesh. Being a part of the agency has taught me to dream and take the leap. Our work reminds me that there are seasons when you’ll have a vision only you can see. It may take years to materialize, but you should never abandon the vision.
Both roles have taught me the importance of understanding your customer (or client), being willing to take risks, and dreaming big.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the best lessons I learned was surrendering my membership in the Strong Friend Club. As the strong friend, we tend to minimize our issues. We’ll make sure that everyone has a space to cry or center. While the entire time, our feelings remain unheard and we shoulder the burden on our own.
As I began my healing journey, I soon realized that I didn’t know how to become vulnerable and let people into my world. The wall was high. To heal, the most difficult two words we struggle with are “Help Me!” None of us want to appear that we can’t handle tough times. However, the moment I began to ask for help was the beginning to let my sister circle love me.
